Bad Breath- What May be Causing It?

Putrid! Awful smell, Hell rising from your mouth. It must be halitosis, or simply bad breath.

Many people are put off by halitosis. If you’re lucky the person you are talking to may not say anything but at any rate, halitosis is embarrassing. But what may be causing it?

Poor dental hygiene

Among the most common causes of bad breathe, poor dental hygiene takes the primary position. Failure to cleanse and remove food debris from the mouth could instantly cause bad breath. Ingredients from tooth paste and mouthwashes are specifically manufactured to improve breath and to cover any traces of unwanted smell.

Hunger

One of the most common causes of bad breath is hunger. For most people, hunger only leads to grumbling sounds from the stomach but for some, bad breath is an obvious symptom of bad smelling breath.

Dry mouth

One of the most mundane reasons why bad breath develops is dry mouth. If the mouth fails to receive substantial moisture for an extended period of time, chances are the mouth will develop a smell. This often happens in the morning right after you wake up but it could also happen when you don’t open your mouth for a few hours. Dry mouth or xerostomia is a condition of lowered production of saliva. On the average, your mouth produces 4 to 6 cups of saliva per day. A slightly lower rate could lead to xerostomia. This condition is characterized by excessive dryness of the mouth but under aggravated condition, xerostomia could lead to burning sensation in the mouth. The leading cause of mouth dryness is insufficient supply of water and other fluids in the body and the use of certain medications. Up to date, there are some 400 identified prescription and non-prescription drugs that could cause mouth dryness.

Xerostomia leads to bad breath because it causes concentration of odor-producing bacteria. Due to insufficient production of saliva, there is lesser fluid to flush and cleanse the bacteria in the mouth. This leads to the accumulation of bacteria in the oral cavity. A dry mouth readies the condition in the mouth for the Volatile Sulfur Compounds to be sent to the air.

Something you just ate. Some foods like garlic, cabbage and onion, AND beverages like coffee, alcohol and tea could instantly cause bad breath after consumption.

Smoking

Smoking residues such as nicotine and tar could add smell to the mouth. These residues would coat the tongue, the teeth and even the lungs which can further inhibit the circulation of good smelling breath.

Systematic diseases

Several diseases could cause and contribute to bad breath. Such conditions include liver failure, renal failure and infections, infections in the lower respiratory tract, metabolic dysfunctions, carcinoma, and diabetes milletus.

Knowing the cause alone may not be helpful though if further actions are not taken. Before you go to the doctor, perform self-examination first. Apart from giving you an idea of how serious your oral problem is, self-diagnosis could also help you start a conscious preventive practice towards better smelling breath.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
what could be the problem with my gastrointestional tract that could cause bad breath and body odor?
has good oral hygiene and wash every day with excellent soap. i have had a very bad case of bad breath and also a bad taste in mouth that wont go away. even after washing the body odor doesn’t ease up some. they say that sometimes bad breath can come from a problem with the stomach what could this be. please help in that my social life is gone. a few mints and even chewing gum doesnt help. and also no dental problems either

    • ANSWER:
Empty stomach, digestive disorders like infection of the digestive tract, constipation and infection of the stomach are some digestion related problems that make up the second most common list of causes of halitosis or bad breath.

Garlic and curry, and other similarly spiced up foods which basically contain onion, hot peppers and other spices. Spices tend to stay and re-circulate through essential oils they leave in your mouth.

Cheese – It gets a hold on your breath and doesn’t let it go. Sometimes, other dairy products too are responsible for bad breath.

Fish like tuna and anchovies, and spicy deli meats like salami and pepperoni also leave their respective peculiar smell long after you have had them.

While there are plenty of short-term products such as gums and fresheners on the market, most do not last more than a couple of hours and tend to only mask the bad breath rather than address underlying causes.

For this reason, many people are now turning to natural herbal and homeopathic ingredients such as Kali. Phos, Silica and Sweet Fennel to successfully help them with halitosis. Kali. Phos is well known for its antiseptic and cleansing properties and is effective at addressing putrefactive conditions such as halitosis, foul smelling flatulence and stools.

Silica works by cleansing the cells of toxins and ridding the body of bad odors, while addressing some of the underlying causes of bad breath such as gum disease, sinus infections and mouth abscess. Lastly, sweet fennel has a long history of use for treating digestion problems and is a popular aid to sweeten the breath.

Bad Breath Symptoms and Cure

Until recently, most treatments have been generally unsuccessful in resolving bad breath conditions. Common treatments such as mouthwashes, mints, chewing gums, mouth sprays, and intestinal cleansings otherwise known as colonics, are simply inadequate. There are many websites offering “magic” breath products. Of course, these are a waste of money. Serious, persistent, chronic bad breath is now very much treatable.

Some bad breath symptoms are sour taste, metallic taste, post nasal drainage, film on tongue, dry mouth, white nodules on the tonsils, and yellow film. Before revealing the cure here are some further explanations:

A White or Yellow Film on the Tongue

This is a very common observation we see in halitosis sufferers. It is caused by the accumulation of bacteria and nasal mucous, and tends to be heaviest in the posterior regions of the tongue. The removal of this film typically does not completely eliminate halitosis for most patients. The reason for this is that the anaerobic bacteria that produce halitosis odors are found through out the entire mouth and in the saliva. If you have longer or larger taste buds (papillae), then you will have a greater potential to trap bacteria in the tongue’s papillae. If you have heavy amounts of these yellow or white films there is a good chance you may have halitosis.

We have found that patients who rapidly build up films on their tongue often have ongoing post nasal (mucous) drainage that they may or may not be aware of. It is important to reduce this drainage using the Hydro Pulse sinus irrigator and the Breath-Ease XL saline powder that is available on our website.

Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is a common symptom with people suffering from halitosis, and it is one of the main causes of halitosis. Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, causes a number of changes to occur in the mouth. First of all, the bacteria become more concentrated in the saliva and they tend to volatilize or evaporate more readily into the air. When this occurs, bad breath will be stronger and more noticeable at greater distances.

Additionally, the pH or acid/base balance of the mouth becomes altered, and this provides an environment that is more conducive to the growth of anaerobic bacteria. Because there is less saliva the flushing or cleansing effect of saliva is reduced. This results in more bacteria and cellular debris accumulating in the oral cavity.

Common causes of xerostomia are aging, insufficient fluid intake, using alcohol based mouth rinses, and numerous medications. Some common medications that can cause drying of the mouth are allergy medications, anti-depressives, blood pressure medications, and diuretics just to name a few. Coffee is considered a diuretic. Some less common causes are radiation treatment to the head and neck areas, patients suffering from Sjogrens Syndrome, diabetes, and other auto-immune diseases.

The first and simplest thing we recommend patients do is be sure that they are consuming at least the recommended daily allowance of water which is eight glasses of water per day. Chewing sugarless gum also helps to increase salivary flow while chewing. Despite numerous products claiming they can eliminate or significantly improve dry mouth conditions, we have only found one product so far that significantly helps the problem. Besides causing halitosis, xerostomia often results in a metallic or bitter taste in the mouth. Without a doubt xerostomia is very difficult to eliminate entirely, but even if a patient’s xerostomia remains we can still effectively treat their halitosis condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Bad breath symptoms and solutions?
So it has been a very unfortunate problem of mine for awhile. I think it has been a problem for about 3 years. I recently started treating my bad breath with using a tongue scraper and listerine mouthwash (ick) twice a day in addition to brushing.

My teeth are in good condition and I do not have cavities. I was wondering what some other causes of BB are, like post nasal drip, and their symptoms. Thanks, please help me stop this issue asap!

    • ANSWER:
I am surprised that you still have bad breath because you said you used a tongue scraper. May I suggest you look at the back of your tongue after you clean it for some white stuff. Bacteria on your tongue is the primary source of bad breath and this must be completely cleaned off to cure bad breath. I suspect you need a better tongue cleaner because you will not have bad breath if you get rid of all the bacteria on your tongue. I have used OraBrush tongue cleaner for about 6 months. I used my toothbrush and a tongue scraper until I learned about OraBrush which is far superior to those other tongue cleaners. Get an OraBrush to see if it does for you what it did for me.

Sour Taste In Mouth

All of us experience a sour taste in the mouth when we get up in the morning. Have you ever wondered why does our mouth taste this way? The phenomenon referred as sour taste in mouth actually has a lot many theories to describe its origin, but sadly, very few of them are conclusive enough. Sour taste could be due to lack of saliva in the mouth or dry mouth, vitamin deficiencies, chronic and periodontal diseases, certain drug intake or even neurological disorder. If this problem is persistent, you should first try concluding your own cause and then treat it accordingly. If required, consult your physician to treat the cause from the root. This article provides you with a list of causes, which lead to sour taste in the mouth. Causes Of Sour Taste In Mouth Anaerobic Bacteria Anaerobic bacteria produce sulfur like smell in the mouth. Dwelling at the back of the tongue, they lend a sour taste to the mouth. During the day, the bacterial functioning in the mouth does not succeed due to the secretion of saliva, as one of the characteristic features of saliva being breaking down the anaerobic bacteria. As such, while one is sleeping, there is a high growth of bacteria in the mouth, due to a drop in the saliva secretion. Due to this very reason, a person experiences both bad breath and a lingering sour taste in the mouth. The bacteria accumulate and form a thick coating on the tongue, which tastes sour. Post Nasal Drip Another cause of sour taste in the mouth is post nasal drip. The mucus in the nose is rich in protein and provides a good breeding ground for bacteria. As a result, the bacteria multiply on a large scale and get accumulated at the back of the tongue. This leads to a sour taste in mouth, which also explains the reason as to why a person prone to sinus infection has a perpetual sour taste in his mouth. Heartburn If you are suffering from heartburn, you are likely to have a sour taste in the mouth. When one eats food, it passes through the esophagus and enters the stomach. A muscle called lower esophageal sphincter or LES lies between the esophagus and stomach and acts as a valve. As soon as the digestive process begins, the stomach releases several acids and gastric juices to digest the ingested food. If the LES gets weak and does not open or close appropriately on time, the undigested lump of food as well as gastric acids reflux into the esophagus. This results in burning sensation in the chest and throat, leaving a sour taste in the mouth. Zenker’s Diverticulum Zenker’s Diverticulum is a disorder, which leads to the development of a pocket or pouch in the esophagus. Usually seen in older adults, under this condition, the decayed food particles get stored in the pouch. When one is lying down after consuming a meal, the food particles tend to fall out of the pouch and enter the throat. This causes severe choking and coughing and also lends a sour taste in the mouth. Deficiencies/ Disorders Certain vitamin deficiencies like Vitamin B12 can cause sour taste in mouth. Even gum infections leads to a sour taste. A lot of pregnant women complain of frequent cases of sour taste in the mouth. This is mainly due to acid reflux. During pregnancy, there is excessive body pressure on the stomach which leads to further pressure on the LES. When this happens, the undigested food spurts back into the esophagus and the person experiences sour taste in the mouth along with few other annoying symptoms. Obese people have the same complaint. Even certain drugs are capable of invoking the sour taste in the mouth. Periodontal disease or any sort of infection in the gum or tooth can also be the reason for sour taste in the mouth. Chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes and respiratory disorders also contribute to sour taste in mouth.

    • ANSWER:

  3. QUESTION:
What can I do about my baby’s breath smelling like sour milk?
I breastfeed my 3 week old. She spits up alot and her breath smells like sour milk. Is there anything I should be doing for her?

    • ANSWER:
If it really bugs you you could wipe her gums with a damp cloth. But that is about it. Personally I wouldn’t do anything.

      Oh and about spitting up:

My baby spits up – is this a problem?

Spitting up, sometimes called physiological or uncomplicated reflux, is common in babies and is usually (but not always) normal. Most young babies spit up sometimes, since their digestive systems are immature, making it easier for the stomach contents to flow back up into the esophagus (the tube connecting mouth to stomach).

Babies often spit up when they get too much milk too fast. This may happen when baby feeds very quickly or aggressively, or when mom’s breasts are overfull. The amount of spitup typically appears to be much more than it really is. If baby is very distractible (pulling off the breast to look around) or fussy at the breast, he may swallow air and spit up more often. Some babies spit up more when they are teething, starting to crawl, or starting solid foods.

A few statistics (for all babies, not just breastfed babies):

Spitting up usually occurs right after baby eats, but it may also occur 1-2 hours after a feeding.
Half of all 0-3 month old babies spit up at least once per day.
Spitting up usually peaks at 2-4 months.
Many babies outgrow spitting up by 7-8 months.
Most babies have stopped spitting up by 12 months.
If your baby is a ‘Happy Spitter’ –gaining weight well, spitting up without discomfort and content most of the time — spitting up is a laundry & social problem rather than a medical issue.

The Best Bad Breath Cure

There are a lot of reasons as to what may be causing bad breath, or halitosis. It may be caused by an illness, medication, or diet issues just to name a few. Because of this, it can be hard to pinpoint the best bad breath cure as things vary from person to person. However, over 90% of bad breath smell originates from the mouth, where plaque and bacteria in the mouth are large contributing factors. The bacteria in your mouth performs the primary function of breaking down food. However, proteins and dairy may have the detrimental result of getting the same bacteria to overproduce sulphur compounds named cysteine. When the air you exhale is mixed with these compounds the result is a bad smell that can be hard to bear.

Most commonly, the tongue is where most bacteria resides, especially towards the back. So a good start to finding the best bad breath cure is by brushing your teeth, flossing and scraping / cleaning the tongue. Many people don’t remember to clean the tongue when they are brushing their teeth and the result of this is that the pesky bacteria builds up on the tongue over a period of time. You may also want to buy a tongue scraper. Try to get as far back on the tongue as you can, for the most effective result. Aim to do brushing, flossing and scraping after every meal and also morning and night for maximum results, to remove bacteria and food particles. Another simple thing to do that is very effective is to brush first with baking soda, as this will balance the pH levels in the mouth, stopping any further growth of bacteria. If you can’t brush, a quick rinse of the mouth with water is also quite effective after a meal. It’s not as effective as brushing, but it will remove any food particles that are still in the mouth..

You can try a mouthwash, but don’t overdue this. Never more than once or twice a day, as the alcohol in most commercial mouthwash kills off the “healthy” bacteria, allowing the overgrowth of halitosis-causing bacteria. Mouthwash generally “masks” the smell, rather than curing it, and sometimes only works for about 10 minutes!

Eating foods that are strong smelling, especially eating garlic and onion will cause problems. Tobacco, coffee and alcohol are also bad factors. Smoking dumps tar into the mouth and makes that horrid “smokers breath. Alcohol and coffee dry the mouth out, stopping the production of saliva which is a natural way of flushing away waste in the mouth. To stop dry mouth during the day, always make sure that you are well hydrated throughout the day.

Should bad breath still remain, and seems to be persistent and difficult to eradicate, then it is time to visit a doctor to rule out any medical conditions, and a dentist to check for teeth and gum infection. By doing this you can work with professionals to find an effective bad breath cure.

Watch your consumption of foods such as alcohol, coffee (both caffeinated and decaffeinated), dense proteins (such as those found in dairy and meat products), garlic and onions, and sugars. These are all bad-breath offenders.

Try to breathe through your nose. Breathing through your mouth can lead to having a dry mouth, which creates a breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria.

Keep a regular log of your eating habits and medications, as these can cause bad breath. Share the log with your dentist.

Brush your teeth and tongue twice a day to remove food particles and plaque, and floss between teeth once a day, preferably in the evening after you eat.

Try using a fluoride mouth rinse with antiseptic ingredients and a pleasant mint flavor. This helps to protect your teeth, and the flavor masks odor problems.

Consider internal breath fresheners’such as over-the-counter pills you take before or after a meal to aid the prevention of malodorous breath’or go the natural route and munch on some parsley after a meal.

  2. QUESTION:
whats the best thing for bad breath?

    • ANSWER:
brush your teeth twice a day, drink lots of water so you dont become dehydrated, use mouth wash, chew gum or if after meals you dont want the meal smell chew on some parsley. oh and floss and see the hygienist regulary

  3. QUESTION:
What is the best thing to do for a dog with bad breath?
I know there are tons of ways but which is the best or worked for you? My dogs breath is pretty horrible lol.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Maddie,

I have a little Maltese and his breath was REALLY bad. I took him for a cleaning at the vet and it seemed to help.

Have you had your dog checked out at the vet? They may have your dog have a thorough dental cleaning which requires anesthesia. The dog could have periodontal disease, it’s the number one disease in dogs and cats. The thorough cleaning at the vet’s would be a good start. I know some groomers also do non-anesthetic dental cleanings, but they aren’t as thorough.

The vet will probably suggest toothpaste and regular manual brushings after the initial cleaning. You can also try an oral solution and put it directly on your pet’s gums. If your dog is too squeamish, there is an oral solution to help breath that you put in his or her water. You can read more about it here: http://www.therabreath.com/art_dogs.asp. I started using it on my dog a few months ago, I just put two capfuls a day in his water and it has worked so well! People have even commented that his breath is much better.

I also give my dog Greenies and the occasional raw hide to chew on which helps remove some of the tartar build up.

      I hope this helps!

  4. QUESTION:
Best thing to buy for getting rid of bad breath?
Hey, recently i’ve noticed my breath kind of, smells.

I brush my teeth as much as possible, but after brushing the ‘minty’ smell doesn’t last and my breath goes back to normal.

    Does listerine work? Etc..

    Thanks, Danny.

    • ANSWER:
It is usually the plaque in between your teeth that causes bad breath. Use the “harp” style dental floss sticks – or the new tiny interdental brushes work better – then use a mouth wash such as Cordosyl – all sold at Tesco etc. If you haven’t been to the dentist this year then perhaps you should also book a visit

  5. QUESTION:
Does anyone know the best thing to give my dog for bad breath?

    • ANSWER:
Maybe try Greenies they help clean the teeth, which in turn helps freshen breath. If that doesn’t work have your vet do a dental on your dog. This will remove tartar and anything else that may be causing the bad breath.

Eliminating Smoke Odor And Toxins: Stop Your Allergy Symptoms And Breath Easy

Tobacco smoke contains about 4,000 chemicals, including 200 known poisons and more than 40 of which are known to cause cancer in humans or animals.

Every time someone smokes, poisons such as benzene, formaldehyde and carbon monoxide are released into the air landing on walls, furniture and other objects inside your room.

The toxins can also stick to carpet, bedding and light bulbs in the room. Once attached the pollutants start to out gas their toxins making it impossible for air cleaner alone (if one is used) to purify the air efficiently. That is why eliminating smoke odor requires several steps and your dedication to improve your health.

On top of the medical issues associated with smoking a lot of people find smoke odor offensive and inappropriate. Don’t get surprised if non-smoking people or even ones who usually smoke outside would try to avoid you invitations and for a very good reason. The bad odors created by tobacco smoke penetrate the fabric of their clothes and body and stay on for a long while.

Smoke odor may cause irritation to people who suffer from chemical sensitivity. The chemicals associated with smoking may cause sore throats, headaches, digestive problems, nervous system problems, respiratory problems, various allergic reactions, and even cancer in some cases.

Eliminating smoke odor and toxins may become a tedious project. Your major steps should be prevention, cleaning and even masking the odor.
If you are ready to take your indoor air quality under control you should stop smoking inside your house.

1. Step outside for smoke or designate a special isolated room where other members of your family won’t be exposed to a secondhand smoke.
2. Your entire house and your car should be scrubbed from top to bottom. Use highly effective cleaning products like ODOBAN
3. If smoke pollution is too strong you may need to replace your carpet, repaint ceiling and walls and even hire professional upholstery cleaner.
4. Get a lot of fresh air by opening doors and windows.

You may consider buying an air purifier, specifically if you relapse at some point and occasionally start smoking indoor again. In this case spend some time on research and get educated on the best available allergy and smoke odor relief air purifiers and that specifically designed for eliminating smoke odor and toxins.

The IQAir GC Multigas, BlueAir air purifiers with SmokeStop filters, and The Austin Air Plus air cleaners, are all designed by the makers to address this problem. You may also consider getting a small air purifier for your car.

I need something that will give me confidence.
Where do I buy tea tree oil from?

    • ANSWER:
Store shelves are overflowing with mints, mouthwashes and other products designed to help people control bad breath. Yet these products help control bad breath (halitosis) only temporarily. And, they actually may be less effective in controlling bad breath than simply rinsing your mouth with water after brushing and flossing your teeth.

Certain foods, health conditions and habits are among the causes of bad breath. In many cases, you can improve bad breath with proper dental hygiene.

If simple self-care techniques don’t solve the problem, you may want to see your dentist or doctor to rule out a more serious condition that may be causing your bad breath.

The causes of bad breath are numerous. They include:

Food. The breakdown of food particles in and around your teeth can cause a foul odor. Eating foods containing volatile oils is another source of bad breath. Onions and garlic are the best known examples, but other vegetables and spices also can cause bad breath. After these foods are digested and the pungent oils are absorbed into your bloodstream, they’re carried to your lungs and are given off in your breath until the food is eliminated from your body.

Alcohol behaves in the same fashion, allowing the measurement of alcohol levels by breath tests. Alcohol itself has almost no odor, however. The characteristic smell on your breath is mainly the odor of other components of the beverage.

Dental problems. Poor dental hygiene and periodontal disease can be a source of bad breath. If you don’t brush and floss daily, food particles remain in your mouth, collecting bacteria and emitting hydrogen sulfur vapors. A colorless, sticky film of bacteria (plaque) forms on your teeth.

If not brushed away, plaque can irritate your gums (gingivitis) and cause tooth decay. Eventually, plaque-filled pockets can form between your teeth and gums (periodontitis), worsening this problem — and your breath. Dentures that aren’t cleaned regularly or don’t fit properly also can harbor odor-causing bacteria and food particles.

Dry mouth. Saliva helps cleanse and moisten your mouth. A dry mouth enables dead cells to accumulate on your tongue, gums and cheeks. These cells then decompose and cause odor. Dry mouth naturally occurs during sleep. It’s what causes “morning breath.” Dry mouth is even more of a problem if you sleep with your mouth open. Some medications as well as smoking can lead to a chronic dry mouth, as can a problem with your salivary glands.
Diseases. Chronic lung infections and lung abscesses can produce very foul-smelling breath. Several other illnesses can cause a distinctive breath odor. Kidney failure can cause a urine-like odor, and liver failure may cause an odor described as “fishy.” People with uncontrolled diabetes often have a fruity breath odor. Chronic reflux of stomach acids from your stomach (gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) and a slight protrusion of the stomach into the chest cavity (hiatal hernia) also can produce bad breath.
Mouth, nose and throat conditions. Bad breath is also associated with sinus infections because nasal discharge from your sinuses into the back of your throat can cause mouth odor. A child with bad breath may have a foreign object lodged in his or her nose. A bean or small item stuck in the nose can cause persistent nasal discharge and a foul odor. Strep throat, tonsillitis and mononucleosis can cause bad breath until the throat infection clears. Bronchitis and other upper respiratory infections in which you cough up odorous sputum are other sources of bad breath. Canker sores may be related to bad breath, especially if they accompany periodontal disease.
Tobacco products. Smoking dries out your mouth and causes its own unpleasant mouth odor. Tobacco users are also more likely to have periodontal disease, an additional source of bad breath.
Severe dieting. Dieters may develop unpleasant “fruity” breath from ketoacidosis, the breakdown of chemicals during fasting.

Most people can prevent or improve bad breath by practicing proper dental hygiene. If bad breath persists despite self-care, see your dentist. If the cause isn’t dental, see your doctor to determine a possible medical cause. You may need a physical examination and testing to pinpoint the underlying cause.

Try the following steps to improve or prevent bad breath:

Brush your teeth after you eat. Keep a toothbrush at work to brush after eating.
Floss at least once a day. Proper flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth.
Brush your tongue. Giving your tongue a good brushing removes dead cells, bacteria and food debris. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush your tongue with at least five to 15 strokes. Pay particular attention to the middle third of the tongue, where most of the bacteria tend to collect.
Clean your dentures well. If you wear a bridge or a partial or complete denture, clean it thoroughly at least once a day or as directed by your dentist.
Drink plenty of water. To keep your mouth moist, be sure to consume plenty of water — not coffee, soft drinks or alcohol. Chewing gum (preferably sugarless) or sucking on candy (preferably sugarless) also stimulates saliva, washing away food particles and bacteria. If you have chronic dry mouth, your dentist or doctor may additionally prescribe an artificial saliva preparation or an oral medication that stimulates the flow of saliva.
Use a fairly new toothbrush. Change your toothbrush every three to four months, and choose a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Schedule regular dental checkups. At least twice a year, see your dentist to have your teeth or dentures examined and cleaned.
You can teach your school-age children to brush and floss their teeth regularly and to brush their tongues to prevent bad breath. However, don’t give children mouthwash to use, because many mouthwash products contain alcohol and can pose a risk for children if swallowed.

  4. QUESTION:
What are the easiest ways to eliminate bad breath?Any advice?
Even after brushing teeth, the bad breath will come back after.Any homemade remedies that you could recommend to reduce or eliminate bad breath?Plus,is it caused by bacterial infection?Any advice? Thanks in advance for answering(:

    • ANSWER:
Thorough flossing is by far the best preventative treatment for bad breath. Bad breath isn’t exactly caused by an infection but more accurately bacteria does cause this. Don’t be alarmed since the mouth houses all kinds of bacteria and enzymes, some being healthy and necessary for your digestion. Also, try to stay away from alcohol based mouthwashes as alcohol is an astringent and actually dries out the mouth by reducing blood flow to the gums. This is ideal for bacteria to reproduce. Instead use alternate mouthwashes. I think crest makes a nice one that is fairly priced.

If none of this helps then check out your local CVS, Walgreens, Eckerds or other neighborhood pharmacy. They usually have step by step bad breath treatments that may work for you.

Dry Mouth Bad Breath Regiment

Dry mouth bad breath is a syndrome and set of symptoms that must be addressed immediately, because it could be a leading indicator of more serious conditions, such as an underlying latent condition having to do with inflamed, enlarged or malfunctioning adenoids. Adenoids can become inflamed and cause a blockage in the back of the patient’s throat if this isn’t dealt with as soon as possible.
Remember, our sense of smell isn’t completely subjective. The sense of smell evolved in order to sniff our chemicals for our survival; good chemicals that are good and nutritious for us, and bad chemicals that are poisonous, detrimental, and fatal to our well being and longevity. Dogs have honed an objective sense of smell that is so keen that some dogs are trained to sniff out cancerous growth and tumors.
So if you’re worried about a more serious underlying condition that might be the cause of your bad breath, you should check your dental hygiene practices against what’s recommended by dental associations and academies. Are you brushing after every meal for example? If you’re not, start there. Your breath just might improve. Are you brushing after every snack? If not, you should be. But if you’re using an electronic toothbrush at home, you don’t need to bring a full scale contraption such as that to work, school, or for a night or two of travel and stay away from home. Bring enough for what’s referred by lifestyle and health specialists as a half brushing (think half baths). If you already bring a makeup bag to work for example, your half toothbrush should fit in that bag, along with a travel sized tube of toothpaste.
Remember, when full brushing, the entire routine is necessary: that calls for the antiseptic mouth wash, the brushing with the aid of a mirror in order to view what’s behind the front row for example, or see what might be in the far back; and of course, flossing. If you’re not flossing at every full brushing and you have bad breath then this might be the trick that cures your problem.
See what flossing does is it scrapes away the spaces between your teeth and gums, clearing the decomposing morsels that produce the bacteria that gives off the bad odor to begin with. if after integrating your flossing into the rest of your dental regiment your breath does not improve, consider the rest of what dental academies and associations recommend to be a part of a good and balanced dental hygiene regiment: flossing at every full brushing, an antiseptic mouth washing after every full brushing, half brushing after every meal and snack, and visiting the dentist at least every 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What’s the solution to a Dry Mouth and Bad Breath?
First of all, when I drink water, I tend to like to urinate a lot. However, if I do not drink water, my mouth gets dry. When my mouth is dry, my breath then stinks. So, I need to drink water…It’s a cycle. Eating food does help my dry mouth, but what else can I do to solve my problems of a dry mouth, bad breath, frequent urination?

    • ANSWER:
A lot of people have this but don’t want to admit. It’s cool that you’re open about it.

The reason why dry mouth leads to bad breath is because whatever food particles or germs have started to decay creating that rotten or sulphurous smell.

Mouthwash has antiseptic that is designed to kill as much of that foul-smelling bacteria. Interestingly enough, the reason why mouthwash appears to be ineffective for some is because of the technique they use.

Even though you can slush around the mouthwash between your gums, the trickier bacteria is on the back of your tongue near your tonsils.

The reason why your mouth salivates is to create “dental irrigation.” It’s the same reason why flowing water will rarely create bacteria.

If you look at the new inventions they have for water bowls for cats and dogs, it’s a flowing waterfall because it keeps the water moving so that it never stagnates long enough for bacteria to gain a foothold and start festering.

When it comes to the composition of the mouth, you salivate under your tongue and it wells up underneath and soaks around between your teeth. However, that saliva rarely moves around on the back of your tongue allowing those food particles embedded there to have the right conditions to start mass producing and creating that odor of bad breath.

There’s no real effective cure for that with exception to:

      1) Brushing your tongue carefully (soft scrub is good so that you don’t vomit)
      2) Making sure you gargle by tilting your head back and allowing that antiseptic in the mouthwash to slush around on the back of your tongue as much as possible
      3) Flossing regularly is to get rid of as much of the food particles stuck between your teeth that will also start to decay in your mouth creating bad breath

With the last part, it’s necessary to floss because it’s a Catch-22:

      1) If you don’t floss, those food particles will accumulate and decay creating bad breath
      2) If you do floss, but it’s done irregularly, your gums aren’t accustomed to it and they’ll bleed
      3) When your gums bleed, that blood that is in your mouth will start to smell because of the dead blood cells that aren’t in a “conducive environment” to survive so you get that “dead blood” smell

Without meaning to sound gruesome, that’s why decaying corpses smell so nasty. It’s decay because bacteria is (which is a natural process) is attempting to break down all the cells into something useful.

Although people hate bacteria, the purpose of bacteria is to convert waste from solid to a gaseous state.

Even when it comes to people who smell bad or have terrible body odor, that’s the human body being forced to get rid of dirt and grime when people don’t take showers regularly. If you don’t take a shower, your body is forced to use a “natural method” of getting rid of those particles.

This comes back to your question of bad breath and its origin. If a person is unable to clean their mouth properly, the body has to resort to its own methods of getting rid of waste, which is by breaking down food and creating decay to eliminate those food particles that haven’t been properly removed.

It’s a biological process. It just happens to be offensive to humans, especially in the U.S., because there’s so much focus on Hygiene.

An interesting tip regarding mouthwash is that the antiseptic they use is designed to be “soft” on the mouth. The same antiseptic is used in cleaning agents, but it’s more abrasive. If you took 409 and attempted to gargle with it, it would be bad.

With that in mind, that’s why Adult Homes use Mouthwash as a disinfectant when cleaning the armpits of senior citizens so that they don’t smell. The mouthwash is a disinfectant, but it’s not harsh on the skin and will disinfect the armpit that is creating a smell.

That’s why a neat trick or tip for anyone who has bad body odor is to take a cotton swab, put mouthwash on it, and apply it to your armpits.

Deodorant masks the smell or covers it up by caking on top of it, but mouthwash really gets in there and tackles the germs and bacteria embedded there.

  2. QUESTION:
Can dry mouth/bad breath be associated with an STD of the mouth?
I had my mouth checked by an oral surgeon and a periodontal disease dentist. They say it doesnt even look like i have dry mouth and since i brush regularly, there should be nothing wrong! I’ve searched and searched the internet and can not find anything else really besides diseases i dont have like diabetes that may cause this or eating the wrong foods…i am a very healthy person and i eat great…some junk here or there but mostly healthy i exercise..i just dont know whats wrong. For about the past 3 years or so, i have had bad breath and dry mouth and now my mouth feels hot inside…im thinking maybe i have an std of the mouth. Thats the only thing left…please tell me if you have heard of any std’s that cause bad breath/dry mouth. Its gettn so bad. oh i have my teeth cleaned every year so thats not it! Thanks a bunch! oh, i’ve had a herpes/aids test done…negative

    • ANSWER:
Apparently you are not yet aware of the importance of your tongue as related to oral hygiene. The top of your tongue is the major cause of bad breath because of the bacteria that live there. Look at your tongue in the mirror for white stuff, especially on the back of your tongue. This white stuff is the source of most mouth problems. After you brush and floss your teeth you should clean the top of your tongue with a good tongue cleaner. Do not use your toothbrush because your toothbrush is designed to clean your teeth. The best tongue cleaner is OraBrush. I have used it for about 6 months with great results. You can also use a mouthwash when you clean your tongue because OraBrush works very well with mouthwash or with just water. Do not use toothpaste with OraBrush. The OraBrush website has a video on how to check your breath for bad breath.

  3. QUESTION:
could dry mouth/bad breath be a sign of oral STD?

    • ANSWER:
Do you floss? Do you use mouthwash? Many times bad breath cannot be cured by brushing alone. In terms of the dry mouth, I would say increase your water intake. Are you on any medications that would cause dry mouth?

  4. QUESTION:
how to stop getting a dry mouth and bad breath from braces?
i brush my teeth, gargle etc but any one know any tricks to keeping a nice fresh mouth with braces??? im too scared to chew gum incase it gets stuck, and im still getting used to my braces so my teeth are still sensitive.

    • ANSWER:
I just got my braces on four days ago and I’ve been chewing gum since about the second day. It’s okay to do, they tell you to just have half a stick and only dental gum, but I chew whole sticks. It doesn’t stick. Since your mouth is sensitive though you’ll have to do what I did and keep it in your mouth, not chewing it, until it gets soft, then you can just keep folding it and pressing it against the roof of your mouth with your tongue. Today was my first day chewing gum with teeth, yes, actual teeth and I was so proud because they didn’t hurt.

  5. QUESTION:
is any of you suffering from acid reflux, if yes doest it give u bad breath? dry mouth?
i have dried everything like protonix, and i dnt eat less than 3 hrs be4 sleep, plz tell me wats work i had this FOR years, and it causes bad breath and tightening of the throat.

    • ANSWER:
It would if you didn’t brush and floss your teeth !

More likely very first thing in the morning. But no body’s breath is too pleasant then anyway.

Ask your dentist about calcium treatment because your teeth will turn yellow and decalcify as well.

Bad Breath Guru explains what causes metallic or bitter taste in mouth

Ever wondered what the real causes of bad breath are? If you happen to taste something metallic, sour or bitter in your mouth, chances are that someone close to you might have smelt it as well. However, not everyone knows what causes bad breath. One of the biggest causes is halitosis. When halitosis causes bad breath, it can be a prolonged problem, especially if the person who has the condition is not even aware that he or she has it in the first place.

One of the explanations behind the taste disorders associated with bad breath is sulfur production. Anaerobic bacteria found in your mouth are responsible for producing these, which can be the causes of bad breath that people are found to generally avoid. While it has not been strictly proven as such, there have been Asian studies that have identified the sour, bitter and metallic tastes to be at the back of one’s mouth. While there is no concrete proof that these are halitosis causes, it is indeed a plausible theory as the anaerobic bacteria mentioned earlier grow at the back of the mouth, which is where the sour, metallic, and bitter tastes are also located.

Finding out what causes bad breath in relation to this phenomenon should also lead one to examine the senses of taste and smell. While they are two separate processes with different parts of the brain acting on these impulses, they are known to intermingle. This is exactly why people sometimes smell something stinky when there is really no stench at all, or the other way around. In the case of halitosis, one may smell his own breath and smell nothing bad, while the person next to him may detect the bad breath.

Once you find out about real halitosis causes or what causes bad breath and realize that you have it, you then know that you have to destroy the causes of bad breath by purchasing an oral rinse and gargling it regularly. These oral rinses are especially designed to be pH-balanced (as the sour, metallic and bitter tastes are all acidic) so that they negate the acidic effects of the sulfur produced at the back of your mouth.

Another possible solution to cure halitosis if your bad breath is much worse than the norm is to make use of baking sodaa”put a small amount of it on your toothbrush, cover it with toothpaste, and brush as normal. This is so that the baking soda can be an extra agent that neutralizes oral acidity for clean, fresh breath.

The key to curing bad breath is by actually doing something about it. Read up on the real culprits behind bad breath, as there are a lot of myths and preconceived notions that prevent people from correct diagnosis. Once you have diagnosed yourself, purchase a good oral rinse right away to get rid of halitosis once and for all.

  1. QUESTION:
How can you tell if bad breath is coming from the mouth or stomach?
ok i have constant bad breath but i dont know if it’s because of my mouth or my stomach. Is there any way to distinguish bad breath from mouth and stomach? oh and please dont say go to dentist/doctor i plan to go to one anyways but before i do i just wanna know where its coming from it would be nice if i didnt have to go to both

    • ANSWER:
It depends on the type of food or drink, if it’s something sugary then it’s probably letting bacteria grow in your mouth that cause an unpleasant smell, so just brushing, flossing, maybe some mouth wash should work. Other foods, and drinks like: garlic, onions, and beer, are absorbed into the blood and are vaporised in the lungs, and for those there is nothing that can be done other than masking the smell with gum or something.

Why Your Bad Breath LITERALLY Disgusts Other People
