10 Step Guide to Avoiding a Person With Bad Breath

10 Step Guide to Avoiding a Person with Bad Breath

Can anyone define for me the definition of Bad Breath? I define it as someone with unpleasant and terribly offensive breath odor. If the person consistently has this offensive order, then it is Halitosisa.which is a nicer word to use, definingabad breath, occurring on a daily basis!

There are several reasons why a person may have odor to the breath. One of the reasons is the body ridding itself of excess acetone, not to mention that there coulda very well bea a break down of proteins in the mouth. Another is if a person is ill and has to have a Nasogastric Tube in place. I experienced this particular tube myself when I was hospitalized a few years ago. It is a tube placed through the nose or mouth to the stomach. I could only imagine what my breath must have smelled likeaduring that time and I am sure that I offended lots of family members and friends who came to visit me. Lastly, there is chronic kidney failure, which can add to breath- odor.

There are several causes of bad breath, such as: poor dental hygiene, eating certain foods like garlic, raw onions or drinking coffee. There are also cavities, smoking, alcoholism, throat infections, sinusitis, Gum Disease and drugs, not to mention a few others, that can cause the rise of the smell of feces to occur in the mouth.

One important thing about bad breath is that it doesn’t discriminate. No matter how much money one has, the high status held in position, grace, charm and beauty, intelligence and expensive cars and clothesaif your breath smellsa.none of it matters! All anyone can smell is that horrific odor. You best believe, my friend, that the bad breath is all that they will remember about you too. Let’s face itabad breath is embarrassing, although not contagious. The most peculiar thing about having breath odor is that the Human sense of smell has the ability to adjust which creates another problem. One doesn’t often know that he/she has breath odor.

1. Stand far enough away from him/her in conversation so that you will not be obvious when you start to frown and twitch your nose.

2. Try to converse over the telephone instead of in person as often as possible.

4. The restroom excuse is a very good oneabut should not be used too many times, as a measure of escape.

5. Hidea when you see them coming!

6. For those who are married and can’t hideastart cooking with herbs. According to Dr. Christine Gerbstadt (Who was said to have lectured on oral health) aCoriander, Spearmint, Tarragon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary and Cardamom are good for helping breath-odor.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How to get rid of bad breath in the morning?
I brush my teeth once at night with a mouth wash and once in the morning after I get out of bed. Every other nights, I use water pik substituting for floss, but I use mouth wash every night and use the tongue cleaner every night as well. How can I get rid of bad breath? Any tips? Please explain.

    • ANSWER:
You will never totally eliminate bad breath, especially in the morning. Your mouth is not eating or talking…therefore, bacteria lies dormant inside during the night. This is what causes bad breath. It doesn’t matter that you brush, floss, mouth wash prior to bed. Bacteria will still lie dormant in an unused salivated cave. Time to accept it and deal with it.

  2. QUESTION:
How to get rid of really bad breath?
Over the past few days my husband has had really bad breath and it was really bad especially over the weekend. I could smell it from his breath and when he breathed through his nose. He tried rinsing his mouth with mouthwash and of course he brushed his teeth several times. He also tried lemon water and his breath still smelled funky. What would cause really bad breath and what can he do to get rid of the bad breath?

    • ANSWER:
Maybe it’s his sinuses and post-nasal drip causing the bad odor. Maybe a sinus decongestant can make a difference.

  3. QUESTION:
How do I deal with bad breath after I got my wisdom teeth pulled?
I got my wisdom teeth removed Thursday. It is now Tuesday, the pain has gone away for the most part but now I am dealing with bad breath. I had all 4 taken out, the top two were out of the gums, so I have holes where I get food stuck but its a lot easier to clean cause I can reach it with my tongue and a q-tip.

However, my bottom ones had to be cut into, I can barely even see the hole. If I spread my cheeks wide enough, I can see some red where I believe the incision was made.

How do I deal with this bad breath? How do I clean my holes? Will I have to worry about this until the holes fill up?

Also, I noticed that all the stitches dissolved Monday night, which is 4 days after the operation. Is this normal?
It is very hard to clean the bottom holes especially since I barely can even see the holes, I can’t really get my tooth brush back there and I don’t know if food is stuck there.

    • ANSWER:
To deal with your holes, gargle with warm salt water. You want to make sure that your holes are clean until they fill in, if not, it may cause an infection. As for the bad breath, scrub the hell out of your tongue, and just make sure those sockets are clean. Stitches dissolving, is normal. A lot of the times its easier on the patient and the doc if the stitches dissolve. Its normal, there are two kinds of stitches (sutures) that i am aware of, the silk, and the gutta. one dissolves and one has to be cut and removed. You’ll be ok, just keep the sockets clean! Get well!

  4. QUESTION:
How can I fight bad breath with invisalign?
I can’t really chew gum and I get very bad breath so how can I keep my breath fresh with Invisalign braces? I already brush, floss, and rinse twice a day.

    • ANSWER:
Maybe you are not aware of the latest information about the cause of bad breath? The tongue, or at least the top of the tongue where bacteria grow and produce bad breath. Your braces may be causing some amount of bad breath, but I believe most of your bad breath is coming from the top of your tongue. I also learned about a great new tongue cleaner, OraBrush, which can only be acquired on the internet. Here is their site: http://www.orabrush.com/halitosis.php

  5. QUESTION:
How far back on your tounge do I brush to help eliminate bad breath?
So I have bad breath and I’m trying to work on it. I brush twice a day and use mouthwash twice a day and I still have very bad breath!!!! Help? I know brushing your tounge can help and I think I need to brush farther back, but I can’t because anymore and I’ll touch my uvula. Is that too far back? Can anyone help with bad breath in general?

    • ANSWER:
I would also check with your dentist to see if your gums have any infection going on. The bacteria that cause that disease smell very bad. If you have tartar under the gums that you can’t see, you can brush all day long, floss tongue scrape, swish w listerine and that smell will not go away! You have to have that tartar physically removed by a professional. Also, if you have a tooth that is decayed, that can smell bad. Huge tonsils with pits can also create a sulfuric smell. The best toothpaste and rinse I have found for breath is Crest Pro Health. Breath RX also has an amazing tongue scraper and it can be washed in the dishwasher.

Also, sweet-smelling fruity acetone breath could be a sign of diabetes.

Bad Breath- What May be Causing It?

Putrid! Awful smell, Hell rising from your mouth. It must be halitosis, or simply bad breath.

Many people are put off by halitosis. If you’re lucky the person you are talking to may not say anything but at any rate, halitosis is embarrassing. But what may be causing it?

Poor dental hygiene

Among the most common causes of bad breathe, poor dental hygiene takes the primary position. Failure to cleanse and remove food debris from the mouth could instantly cause bad breath. Ingredients from tooth paste and mouthwashes are specifically manufactured to improve breath and to cover any traces of unwanted smell.

Hunger

One of the most common causes of bad breath is hunger. For most people, hunger only leads to grumbling sounds from the stomach but for some, bad breath is an obvious symptom of bad smelling breath.

Dry mouth

One of the most mundane reasons why bad breath develops is dry mouth. If the mouth fails to receive substantial moisture for an extended period of time, chances are the mouth will develop a smell. This often happens in the morning right after you wake up but it could also happen when you don’t open your mouth for a few hours. Dry mouth or xerostomia is a condition of lowered production of saliva. On the average, your mouth produces 4 to 6 cups of saliva per day. A slightly lower rate could lead to xerostomia. This condition is characterized by excessive dryness of the mouth but under aggravated condition, xerostomia could lead to burning sensation in the mouth. The leading cause of mouth dryness is insufficient supply of water and other fluids in the body and the use of certain medications. Up to date, there are some 400 identified prescription and non-prescription drugs that could cause mouth dryness.

Xerostomia leads to bad breath because it causes concentration of odor-producing bacteria. Due to insufficient production of saliva, there is lesser fluid to flush and cleanse the bacteria in the mouth. This leads to the accumulation of bacteria in the oral cavity. A dry mouth readies the condition in the mouth for the Volatile Sulfur Compounds to be sent to the air.

Something you just ate. Some foods like garlic, cabbage and onion, AND beverages like coffee, alcohol and tea could instantly cause bad breath after consumption.

Smoking

Smoking residues such as nicotine and tar could add smell to the mouth. These residues would coat the tongue, the teeth and even the lungs which can further inhibit the circulation of good smelling breath.

Systematic diseases

Several diseases could cause and contribute to bad breath. Such conditions include liver failure, renal failure and infections, infections in the lower respiratory tract, metabolic dysfunctions, carcinoma, and diabetes milletus.

Knowing the cause alone may not be helpful though if further actions are not taken. Before you go to the doctor, perform self-examination first. Apart from giving you an idea of how serious your oral problem is, self-diagnosis could also help you start a conscious preventive practice towards better smelling breath.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
what could be the problem with my gastrointestional tract that could cause bad breath and body odor?
has good oral hygiene and wash every day with excellent soap. i have had a very bad case of bad breath and also a bad taste in mouth that wont go away. even after washing the body odor doesn’t ease up some. they say that sometimes bad breath can come from a problem with the stomach what could this be. please help in that my social life is gone. a few mints and even chewing gum doesnt help. and also no dental problems either

    • ANSWER:
Empty stomach, digestive disorders like infection of the digestive tract, constipation and infection of the stomach are some digestion related problems that make up the second most common list of causes of halitosis or bad breath.

Garlic and curry, and other similarly spiced up foods which basically contain onion, hot peppers and other spices. Spices tend to stay and re-circulate through essential oils they leave in your mouth.

Cheese – It gets a hold on your breath and doesn’t let it go. Sometimes, other dairy products too are responsible for bad breath.

Fish like tuna and anchovies, and spicy deli meats like salami and pepperoni also leave their respective peculiar smell long after you have had them.

While there are plenty of short-term products such as gums and fresheners on the market, most do not last more than a couple of hours and tend to only mask the bad breath rather than address underlying causes.

For this reason, many people are now turning to natural herbal and homeopathic ingredients such as Kali. Phos, Silica and Sweet Fennel to successfully help them with halitosis. Kali. Phos is well known for its antiseptic and cleansing properties and is effective at addressing putrefactive conditions such as halitosis, foul smelling flatulence and stools.

Silica works by cleansing the cells of toxins and ridding the body of bad odors, while addressing some of the underlying causes of bad breath such as gum disease, sinus infections and mouth abscess. Lastly, sweet fennel has a long history of use for treating digestion problems and is a popular aid to sweeten the breath.

Halitosis Symptoms

Halitosis and Its Symptoms – Do They Ever Stop You From Enjoying Life?

Dealing with halitosis and its symptoms can be virtually debilitating. Imagine any part of life that doesn’t involve coming into contact with other people – your work, your family, even ordering something at the fast food restaurant can’t always be done at the drive-through. While some people just don’t seem to care about their breath or hygiene, most people are mortified if they consistently deal with bad breath symptoms. Their entire life can be affected.

There are some quick fixes for halitosis and its symptoms, and most don’t cost a lot of money or a lot of time either. For example, you may just need to make a few changes to your diet.

Halitosis Fixes- Change Your Diet
Those who drink endless cups of coffee every day can brush and brush but still have the lingering odor on their breath. This might be because the odor permeates their skin and is in their digestive system, something that can’t be fixed with a toothbrush.

The same could be said for other foods such as onions, garlic, fish, curry, and so on. Trying to brush away halitosis and its symptoms when it’s emanating from your digestive system is pointless. Instead, try chewing parsley or mint leaves after such a meal to reduce digestive and stomach acids.

Halitosis Fixes- Keep Hydrated
Other fixes for bad breath include keeping yourself hydrated so that your mouth doesn’t dry up. When you have dry skin and gums this keeps germs stuck to the inside of your mouth and bacteria build up.

Halitosis Fixes- Avoid Alcohol
This also means avoiding alcohol, whether it’s alcoholic beverages or mouthwash and rinses that contain alcohol. Alcohol is a drying agent and can just add to your bad breath. When choosing mouthwashes, look for those that are alcohol free.

Halitosis Fixes- Chew Gum
Chewing sugarless gum is another good fix for halitosis and its symptoms. Chewing gum stimulates saliva production which helps to rinse away those germs and bacteria. Of course the mint flavor also helps! However gum also needs to be sugarless as sugar is very bad for your teeth and promotes tooth decay. It can also dry your mouth as well, which adds to the problem.

Dealing with halitosis and its symptoms doesn’t need to stop you from enjoying your life and doesn’t need to interfere with your job or other relations. Try these quick fixes and see if they don’t help to greatly reduce the problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How do u get rid of halitosis probably caused by helicobacter pylori?
My friend is incidentally diagnosed to be infected with h. pylori during an egd. We read that h.pylori can also cause halitosis which he has.he was given antibioics but after the whole course, he didnt follow up.He doesnt have any abdominal pain.No abdominal symptoms except now he still has halitosis.

    • ANSWER:
Well, first off….that answer about the baking soda drink isn’t neccessarly good for you. When you reduce the acid in your stomach, those bacteria can multiply like mad (the acid does protect your stomach from bacteria/viruses/amoeba/etc that you can ingest)….which in turn will make the h. pylori bacteria multiply, hence making the ulcer worse.

Your friend’s best bet is to make sure he follows up….he needs to demand it cuz it is his body…not the doctor’s! And he also needs to mention the halitosis to his doctor if it is bothering him.

Not to say it’s a cure for your friend’s halitosis, but he MIGHT want to try liquid chlorophyll….just a squirt in some water will be enough. If he likes the taste of mint, he should like it….mind you, it turns your water dark green ;) Try Nature’s Sunshine….

      http://www.sunshine4health.com/

and do a search for it. Like I said, it’s not a guarantee that it’ll work, but he could always try it. Up to him tho.

      Hope that helps :)

  5. QUESTION:
Does my mother have halitosis? How can I be sure?
My mother’s breath is often too bad to believe sometimes and I’d like to know if she may or may not show symptoms of halitosis.

First and foremost though, I’ll give you an example of how bad her breath can get, just to give everyone here a sense of scope (no pun intended).

Today my mom and I went to speak with the vice principal of my school about my excused absences, all of which weren’t so excused in the eyes of the administration. Regardless as to why we were there, her breath was horrible. We were trapped in a small room; I could hardly stand it. She went on and on, talking and talking, filling the room with what I could only assume at the time was mustard gas. Her breath was so horrid I considered asking her to shut her mouth, lest we all die of asphyxiation.

This wasn’t the first time her breath had made my nose bleed, but it was the first time it went so far as to embarrass me in public, and I don’t want that happening to me again. You don’t know the meaning of humiliation and disgust until you feel like vomiting just to get a different smell in the room and break the awkward glances being directed at your mother’s mouth.

Background aside, I’m looking to better understand the symptoms of halitosis. I’ve already done some research and as I understand it now she might be more than characteristic of someone with this awful condition. For the record, my mother’s a smoker, an alcoholic, and she’s overweight. She’s also a diabetic, and doesn’t necessarily live a healthy lifestyle though recently she’s made great strides. The talk we had with the vice principal took place in the morning, and I can remember seeing her brush her teeth, which is the chief reason why I think all of this might be a medical problem instead of a matter of personal hygiene. I say all of this because from what I’ve read, those conditions can have an effect the condition of someones’ breath.

I’d really like to hear some educated opinions on this subject, because this is the last time I’m putting up with the scents that she seems to expel from her mouth. It’s not that her breath is always bad, it’s just that occasionally it can be, and I’m not sure whether it’s just temporary bad breath or something much more serious. Either way, it’s a problem and it’s effecting the quality of my life.

Again, if anyone can, give me a medical opinion and tell me what to look for so I can either confirm or reject her assumed condition.

    Thanks in advance everyone.

    • ANSWER:
It’s something more serious… it’s called periodontitis. Inflammation of the periodontium (tissues surrounding the teeth), which is caused by a bacterial infection within the periodontal tissues (gums, bone and ligmaents holding the teeth in place).

Brushing and flossing is not enough to get this under control. She needs to seek a dental professional, preferably a periodontist. Because of all her risk factors… smoker, drinker, diabetic… she is at a much higher risk of having this disease destroy her smile very quickly.

If left untreated, the tissues surrounding the teeth will be destroyed or eaten away by the toxins these bacteria produce. As the tooth support structure is destroyed, the tooth becomes more and more mobile, and will eventually fall out.

The smell you are smelling is infection.

Here’s a little more for you to read through.

What is Bad Breath and Causes of Bad Breath

Bad Breath is usually caused by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. Bad breath is not contagious, meaning you cannot catch it from someone else. Chronic bad breath, known as Halitosis, does not come from the stomach. The only odor that comes from the stomach is when you burp. Food eaten such as garlic and spicy foods once absorbed into the body can release odor through the lungs when you breathe. Food odors are transitory and should not be confused with bad breath. Human’s sense of smell has the ability to adjust to odor.

Symptoms of Bad Breath

Poor dental hygiene a” Teeth are coated with film or plaque. You may have food trapped between the teeth and pale or swollen gums.

Infections in the mouth a” Symptoms depend on the type of infection. They can include:

Red or swollen gums that may bleed easily, especially after brushing or flossing
Pus between teeth or a pocket of pus (abscess) at the base of a tooth

People who have periodontitis often experience bad breath because of bacteria accumulating in areas that are not cleaned easily, such as deep pockets around teeth.

Fortunately, treatment is very effective for people who have bad breath of mouth origin.

Why Do Poor Habits Cause Bad Breath?

If you don’t brush and floss your teeth daily, food particles can remain in your mouth, which promotes bacteria growth between teeth, around the gums, and on the tongue. This causes bad breath. In addition, odor-causing bacteria and food particles can cause bad breath if dentures are not properly cleaned.

Medical causes

Medical causes of bad breath are rare (about 10%), but they can occur. If you have a throat or tonsil infection, the catarrh that is produced can cause bad breath.

Preventing Smelly Breath

So what’s a kid to do? Don’t smoke or use tobacco products, of course. And take care of your mouth by brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing once a day. Brush your tongue, too, because bacteria can grow there. Flossing once a day helps get rid of particles wedged between your teeth. Also, visit your dentist twice a year for regular checkups and cleanings.

Treatment of Bad Breath

When saliva production diminishes, keep the mouth wet with a liberal intake of water. Experts advise drinking eight glasses of water a day for basic metabolic function, and it seems that keeping the mouth moist is a good way of keeping the bacterial flora of the mouth under control. Hold the water in the mouth as long as possible-minimum of twenty seconds, and swish it around to loosen food particles and other bits of debris that bacteria feed upon. The longer the water remains in the mouth the better.

The tongue scrapper much be somewhat flexible to follow the contours of the tongue yet rippled, ridges or “rake-like” in profile to do a proper job. Several passes of this instrument scarped lightly over the tongue twice a day will effectively remove the majority of evil-smelling debris, food, and bacterial residue.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What Causes Bad Breath and How to Avoid it?
What are the main causes of bad breath and how should I avoid it?

    • ANSWER:
Bad breath will murder your social life, so it’s reasonable for you to want to figure out what may be causing it. Some causes, such as spicy foods, are easy to solve, but others may also indicate something serious.

Macleans Confidence Fresh Breath Antibacterial Mouth Spray How do I know if I have got bad breath? Well, people can maintain a distance from you, but may be too polite to tell you the real reason.

If you’re lucky, someone will just be direct and just tell you, but failing that, you can lick your wrist and smell your saliva – if it stinks, your breath probably will too.

So lets look at 5 of the main causes of bad breath.

      1. Smoking

Are you a smoker? Smoking, in addition to many other obvious ways in which it is bad for you, makes your breath smell of stale smoke. It also irritates gums and can increase your risk of gum disease, which can also be a cause of bad breath.

      Solution? Quitting smoking.

      2. Food

Next is the food. If you like raw onions and garlic, simply choose between this particular passion and decent breath. Alcohol and coffee also affect your breath, but fortunately you can get rid of your bad breath by limiting their consumption.

Solution? Watch what you eat and drink.

Note that if you eat infrequently, or diet this can also cause bad breath. This is also the case if you are not eating enough carbohydrates.

      3. Hygeine

Of course, if you’re casual about keeping your mouth clean, no amount of cutting back on the garlic will help. It is not enough to brush your teeth only in the morning.

Corsodyl Mint MouthwashYour mouth is full of bacteria that cause plaque, gum disease and tooth decay.

When bacteria are mixed with saliva and food trapped between teeth, it produces a bad smell. The bacteria can reside on the tongue, which also affect your bad breath.

Solution? Floss and brush at least twice a day. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles, and take time to clean the teeth and tongue scraping can also help.

You can also rinse with antibacterial mouthwash, but this does not replace brushing teeth, no matter what your friends tell you. Make sure you visit your dentist regularly.

      4. Gum Disease

So now that you are aware of these issues you are brushing twice a day and flossing, avoiding garlic and smoking but you are still suffering! What could it be?

You might have gum disease or dental decay and you should make an appointment to see your dentist immediately.

      5. Medical Problems

Although this is rare, really bad breath could indicate a medical condition.

For example, your mouth could not produce enough saliva, or you could have an infection in the lungs, throat or nose. Bad breath also may indicate that you have diabetes, liver or kidney problems, or that you suffer from heartburn.

If you have been cleaning your mouth thouroughly and bad breath persists, you should immediately consult your doctor.

Recent studies have confirmed that poor oral hygiene, can increase the risk of heart attack.

Poor hygiene can lead to bleeding gums, which provide the bacteria with a route into the bloodstream, where they can initiate blood clots leading to heart disease.

  2. QUESTION:
What type of food beside garlic and onion causes bad breath?
I do know there are lots of factor causing bad breath.
I want to know specifically about certain food, fruits or vegetables we should avoid for this reason… at least for certain occasion!

    • ANSWER:
Your question suggests that you want to cure or keep from having bad breath by choosing certain foods. This will help cure bad breath but it is not the real cause of your bad breath. The primary cause of bad breath is the bacteria on your tongue, especially the back one-third of your tongue. Look at your tongue in the mirror for some white stuff. This is the bacteria and this material must be removed to keep you from having bad breath. When you eat a smelly food, such as garlic, some of the material stays on your tongue and produces bad breath. Cleaning your tongue will reduce your bad breath from the garlic food. Most people think the garlic smell comes from your stomach but it actually comes from some of the garlic staying on your tongue.
So, brush and floss your teeth and then clean your tongue, specifically the back one-third and you will not have bad breath. I use OraBrush tongue cleaner because it is designed to clean the back of the tongue. My wife tells me I have kissing sweet breath. It works for me.

  3. QUESTION:
What are some medical condition that causes bad breath? 10 points?
I have a bad breath but i have a very good oral hygiene

Could it be because of a medical condition, lets say ulcer

what could be a cure for some medical conditions that causes bad breath?

    • ANSWER:
See … 10 points will not help you … Only you you can help yourself … Anyway, I feel for you. So I will give my thoughts.

Bad breath can be caused by various reasons: bad dental hygiene, gum disease (Which has nothing to do with how well you brush only), dry mouth, liver problems, nasal drips …. and so on. Since you seem to be in otherwise healthy condition, I would rule out some of the rare occasions when the issue can be caused by kidney and other conditions.

Thinking having good hygiene can be different than what a doctor would want for example. If you are brushing and flossing may be from some time, but prior to that you did not, then the plaque build up will cause persistent breadth issue. Only your periodontist can confirm that. If your regular dentist has not been able to resolve the issue, get a referral for the periodontist.

If gum disease is not the problem, cavities can collect the food. Sometimes, you may not be able to see the cavities and what you think as small cavity can be big inside. Only X-Ray’s can reveal these issues.

If you are not already, you should see a dentist every six months to get your teeth cleaned. If you are smoking you would need to stop. Drink lots of water. That helped me a lot. Oh, the other thing is to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner regularly. Don’t over do it as tongue is real tender and can irritate easily.

Bad breadth problem in general is indicative of other systemic issues. It can be anything from mouth itself to other issues. Thus you should consult a doctor. My issue got cleared when I went to periodontist. Now I enjoy very smell free breath which in itself has increased my confidence.

      Good luck,

  4. QUESTION:
what do you eat that causes bad breath?
what eating habits causes bad breath? like most common to least common, or is therer anything in the stomach , like acids not working right that might cause the bad breath, i need a straight detailed answer if it is not to much to ask.

    • ANSWER:
      garlic, onion, salmon, chili fritos.

  5. QUESTION:
what causes bad breath even though you go to the dentist and to the doctor?
I brush, visit the dentist, but i have a bad odor on my breath , i’m very self conscious. if you have any pointer please help me.

    • ANSWER:
One of the main culprits is DRY MOUTH. My hubby has it. You can get it from not drinking enough water or like him it is a combo of not enought water and too much coffee. If you drink to much of another drink (soda, juice, tea, coffee etc) it washes the saliva away. When there is not enought siliva you get dry mouth syndrome.

Use Biotene Mouthwash, floss and brush twice a day. Make sure you use this mouthwash regularly and hold it in you mouth for a full minute.

      It works.

Can a Sore Throat Cause Bad Breath?

  4. QUESTION:
what could be the problem with my gastrointestional tract that could cause bad breath and body odor?
has good oral hygiene and wash every day with excellent soap. i have had a very bad case of bad breath and also a bad taste in mouth that wont go away. even after washing the body odor doesn’t ease up some. they say that sometimes bad breath can come from a problem with the stomach what could this be. please help in that my social life is gone. a few mints and even chewing gum doesnt help. and also no dental problems either

  5. QUESTION:
can excessive bacteria on your tongue cause bad breath?
The bacteria that is already on your tounge but causes bad breath with an exsessive amount if so what is the treatment

    • ANSWER:
You are right. The greatest source of bad breath is the bacteria on the top of your tongue. Mints, gum, mouthwash, and even toothpaste will cover up bad breath, but they do not cure it because they do not get rid of the bacteria. The best “cure” is to remove this bacteria with a high quality tongue cleaner. I use OraBrush tongue cleaner because it is designed to clean the back of the tongue where most of the bacteria is located. Great product in my opinion.

The Halimeter ® — Measure Bad Breath Scientifically

Bad Breath- Using a Halimeter To Fight Bad Breath

Many people today are turning to the use of a halimeter to fight bad breath by getting an accurate reading of how bad their breath is and just what compounds are causing it to be bad in the first place. But what is this instrument, and just how can you use a halimeter to fight bad breath? Is it something you use at home, and how does it work?

A halimeter is a little machine that you use that takes a reading of your breath through a special tube you blow into. It looks something like a desktop version of the breathalyzer machines that police officers use. To use a halimeter to fight bad breath, you would check your breath on a regular basis and let the machine dissect your breath to figure out the many different chemicals and enzymes it contains. The most common causes of bad breath in hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide. By realizing what chemicals are in your breath that’s causing its odor you can then better address the problem at its roots.

A dentist can help you use a halimeter to fight bad breath by giving you a thorough exam, taking a health history, and using a chart or record to note improvements in your situation. By recording the different enzymes and chemicals that are in your breath he or she can understand if the treatment you’re using is working, and can also get a better idea of where your bad breath is coming from. Using cover-ups such as gum and mints just are not going to fix your bad breath completely, but understanding where the odor is coming from and tracking the effectiveness of your treatment options is going to help eliminate the problem completely.

Unfortunately you cannot purchase your own halimeter to fight bad breath at home; this is something only your dentist can use. Many bad breath clinics also use a halimeter to fight bad breath by having their clients come in on a regular basis for a reading and recommendation. If you have chronic halitosis, you should not hesitate to speak to your dentist about using one of these machines to monitor your breath and figure out the problems with it. If he or she does not have one in their office, they can probably recommend another practitioner that does, so definitely make an appointment with your dentist and ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is a halimeter? I need a refinement of the word/instrument measuring the level of volatile sulfur?

    • ANSWER:
A Halimeter is an instrument for measurement of the level of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in the mouth.
Halimeter was introduced in the early 1990s as an adjunct method for determining halitosis (bad breath, oral malodor) levels, alongside human assessment of odor levels (the latter is considered the gold standard). The instrument measures parts per billion levels of hydrogen sulfide and, to a lesser extent, methyl mercaptan, two gases which were previously shown to be associated with bad breath using gas chromatograph

The Halimeter is manufactured by Interscan Corp. in California, and based on their earlier model 1170 portable sulfide monitor. This was the model used in the two original studies [1][2]. These studies, conducted for the first time by Dr. Mel Rosenberg, showed a significant correlation between monitor levels and oral malodor scores. The small size, simplicity of use, and price (relative to gas chromatograph) of the Halimeter made it popular among dentists seeking to diagnose and treat bad breath, as well as scientific researchers. Much of the published research on bad breath over the past dozen years has employed this instrument. The electrochemical sensor is sensitive to alcohol vapors, and requires recalibration over time. The Halimeter has been the only VSC monitor for the diagnosis of halitosis for years, but now that its patent has expired, it faces competition from other sulfur monitors recently introduced into the marketplace.

Information on the causes of bad breath

The Most Common Causes of Bad Breath

Bad breath is a common health problem which greatly affects the day to day activities of so many people. The offensive odor from the mouth is unpleasant to those who come in close contact with bad breathers.

The problem will be doubled by psychological trauma leading to depression. The sufferers from this problem will be isolated from the society. This can even lead to marital disharmony.

Literally speaking all human beings are bad breathers. Oral cavity contains millions of anaerobic bacteria like fusobacterium and actinomyces which acts on the protein of food materials and putrefies them. This process results in the formation of offensive gases like hydrogen sulphide, methyl mescaptan, cadaverin, skatol causing bad odor. Most of us control this by regular brushing, tongue cleaning and gargling. Even after maintaining cleanliness in the mouth some individuals suffer from offensive smell due to various causes which has to be diagnosed and treated properly.

Here are the most common causes of bad breath.

1) Poor oral hygiene:

If oral hygiene is not maintained properly the mouth becomes the seat for millions of bacteria which produce offensive gases by degrading the food debris. Bad breath is severe in those who do not brush their teeth regularly and clean their mouth after every food. Snacks taken in-between meals can also produce bad breath because of improper cleaning.

Bad breath is common in almost all people in the morning on waking. During sleep there is less production of saliva .Saliva has got some antibacterial properties which help to keep the mouth clean. Saliva contains oxygen molecules which are needed to make oral cavity aerobic. So the reduction in it’s quantity during sleep makes a favorable condition for anaerobic bacteria.

2) Food habits:

The main cause of bad smell is due to degradation of protein by the bacteria and hence all food products rich in protein favor bad breath. Meat, fish, milk products, eggs, cakes, nuts, pear can cause bad breath. Some food articles can produce particular type of smell which may be unpleasant. Raw onion can produce typical bad smell. It is said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a raw onion a day keeps everybody away. Eating groundnuts can also produce bad smell. However if proper cleaning is done smell can be reduced irrespective of the nature of food. Irregularity in timing of food can also produce bad breath. Small food articles taken in between the meals can also produce bad smell.

3) Biofilm:

There is formation of a thin sticky coating called biofilm on the tongue and oral mucosa. This coating is thick on the posterior aspect of the tongue where millions of gram negative bacteria are seen .The thick coating on the tongue is always associated with bad breath. Even a thin biofilm can make anaerobic condition favorable for bacterial proliferation.

4) Dental caries:

This is a destructive process causing decalcification with destruction of enamel and dentine resulting in cavitisation of the tooth. These are produced mainly by the lactobacilli. Food particles are deposited inside these cavities and are putrefied by the anaerobic bacteria producing bad smell. Normal brushing will not remove the food debris easily and hence they are putrefied completely. Caries are common in schoolgoing children and in those who do not maintain proper oral hygiene .Calcium and vitamin deficiency can also predispose caries.

5) Gingivitis:

Gum is a mucus membrane with supporting connective tissue covering the tooth bearing borders of the jaw .The main function of gum is protection .Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gum .Due to various causes gum tissue get infected resulting in swelling, pain and discharge. If the condition becomes worse the infection spread towards periodontal area leading to continuous discharge called pyorrhea. Some times the infection goes deep producing alveolar abscess with discharge of pus. Infection can even reach the bone causing osteomyelitis. All these conditions can produce offensive smell.

6) Gum retraction:

When the gums retract from the teeth a gap is developed which will lodge food particles and cause bad breath.

7) Dental plaques and tartar deposits; Plaques and tartar is deposited mainly in the gaps between the teeth and gum. This will provide shelter for the food debris and bacteria causing bad breath.

8) Ulcerative lesions and coatings:

Almost all ulcerative lesions of the mouth are associated with bad breath. These lesions may be caused by bacteria, viruses, food allergies or due to autoimmune disorders. Apthous ulcer is the commonest among ulcerative lesions. Others are herpes, fungal infections, vincents angina, infectious mononucleosis, scarlet fever, diphtheria, drug reactions. Cancerous ulcers produce severe bad breath. All fungal infections produce white coating (candidiasis). Leucoplakia is a white thick patch on the mucus membrane of the mouth and tongue. It is considered as a precancerous condition. Offensive breath is associated with these conditions.

9) Diseases of the salivary glands:

Saliva is very useful to supply oxygen to all parts of the oral cavity. Even a thin film of coating called biofilm can provide an anaerobic condition in the mouth. Saliva can wet these layers and make an aerobic condition which is unfavorable for the bacteria .Any condition which reduces the production of saliva can increase bacterial activity. Some times the salivary duct is obstructed by stones or tumors. Cancer of the salivary gland is associated with offensive odor. In suppurative parotitis purulant discharge into the mouth causes bad breath.

10) Tonsillitis:

Tonsils are a pair of lymphoid tissue situated in the lateral wall of oropharynx. Inflammation of the tonsil is called tonsillitis. Bad breath is seen in both acute and chronic tonsillitis. Quinsy or peritonsillar abscess can also produce bad breath.

11) Tonsillar plaques and tonsillar fluid:

If bad breath persists even after maintaining proper oral hygiene there is possibility of this condition. Serous fluid secreted from the folds of tonsil is very offensive. Some patients complain that they hawk some cheesy materials from the throat, which are very offensive in nature. These are formed inside the tonsillar crypts which contain thousands of bacteria. In such conditions tonsillectomy gives noticeable relief from bad breath.

12) Pharyngitis and pharyngeal abscess:

Pharynx is a fibro muscular tube which forms the upper part of the digestive and respiratory tract. Inflammation of the pharynx is called pharyngitis, caused mainly by bacteria and viruses. Bad breath is present in pharyngitis along with other signs like cough and throat irritation. Abscesses in the wall of pharynx can also produce offensive discharge of pus in to the throat.

13) Dentures:

Denture users may complain about bad smell due to lodgment of small food debris in between. Proper brushing may not be possible in denture users especially fixed dentures.

14) Tobacco:

Tobacco chewing is associated with bad breath. The smell of tobacco itself is unpleasant for others. Tobacco can irritate the mucus membrane and cause ulcers and coatings. Gingivitis and pyorrhea are common in tobacco chewers. Tartar is deposited on the teeth mainly near the gums. Tobacco chewers get gastric acidity with eructations. All these cause offensive smell.

15) Smoking:

Smokers always have bad smell. It can also produce lesions in the mouth and lungs causing bad breath. Smoking increases carbon dioxide in the oral cavity and reduces oxygen level, causing a favorable condition for bacteria. Smoking reduces appetite and thirst hence acid peptic disease is common in chain smokers.

16) Lesions in the nose and ear:

Bad breath is occasionally seen in sinusitis (infection of para nasal sinuses). In case of post nasal dripping bad breath is common due to the presence of protein in the discharges. These proteins are degraded by the bacteria. Infection in the middle ear with discharge of pus in to the throat through the Eustachian tube (passage from middle ear to the throat) can also cause offensive odor. Chronic rhinitis (infection of mucus membrane of nose) and foreign bodies in the nose can also produce bad smell in the expired air.

17) Diabetes mellitus:

Mostly all diabetic patients suffer from bad breath. Coated tongue, ulcers and coatings in the mouth, increased sugar level in tissues are responsible for halitosis. Bacterial growth in diabetic patient is very faster than non diabetic individuals.

18) Fevers:

Bad breath is common in almost all fevers. Even an acute fever can produce bad breath. Severe bad breath is seen in typhoid .Other infectious diseases like Tuberculosis, AIDS produce bad smell.

19) Fasting and dehydration:

Dry mouth favors bacterial activity. So any condition which produces dryness in the mouth makes the breath offensive. Even though the food particles are known to produce bad breath, fasting can also produce the same. Production of saliva is also reduced during fasting. Chewing and swallowing also helps to keep the mouth clean.

20) Bedridden patients:

Bedridden patients suffer from offensive breath due to thick coating on the tongue. Water intake is also limited in these patients. Regurgitation of food aggravates the condition. Since they talk less aeration in the oral cavity is reduced which favors anaerobic bacteria to become active.

21) Diseases of stomach and esophagus:

Eructation of gas and food produce unpleasant smell. Abnormality in the function of lower sphincter can allow the food to regurgitate upwards causing bad breath. Bad breath is also common in gastritis, gastric ulcer and cancer of stomach.

22) Intestinal diseases:

Bad breath is common in patients suffering from ulcerative lesions of intestine like ulcerative colitis. Other diseases are malabsorption syndrome intestinal tuberculosis, peritonitis.

23) Diseases of lungs:

Lung diseases like pneumonia, lung abscess, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, lung cancer can produce bad odor during expiration.

24) Liver disorders:

Liver diseases like hepatitis, cirrhosis, can cause halitosis. Gall bladder diseases with vomiting also causes unpleasant odor.

25) Psychiatric patients:

Bad breath is common in psychotic patients due to poor hygiene, irregular food habits, less water intake and.

26) Somatisation disorder:

This is a psychiatric disorder characterized by the presence of a physical symptom that suggest a medical illness .These patients come with physical complaints like pain, nausea difficult respiration, bad smell. This condition is diagnosed after detailed examination of the patient with all investigations. Since this is a psychiatric disorder it has to be managed with a psychological approach.

      Good luck,

  4. QUESTION:
What are the causes of bad breath? If a bad tooth is one, shouldn’t I have pain in that tooth?
Could allergies cause bad breath? I have a tingle on the roof of my mouth and a funny taste in my mouth. I have not been told I have bad breath but who really is going to say anything.

    • ANSWER:
Gingivitis, not brushing, not brushing your toungue, certain medications, & a bad tooth can all cause bad odor. Also, just because a tooth doesn’t hurt doesn’t mean there’s nothing wrong with it. If you’re having a lot of sinus drainage b/c of your allergies that could do it too. Your sinuses drain down the back of your throat, there is an opening back there at the top of your oral cavity.

  5. QUESTION:
What causes bad breath? what can you do to get rid of it?
according to my b/f i sometimes have bad breath, he says it smells kinda sour. um i brush and floss regualrly and i use mouthwash too.
sometimes i get sinus infections could this cause my breath to smell?
and what can i do to try to get rid of it?
    any suggestions will help.

    • ANSWER:
Germs/bacteria: in your mouth, in your sinus, in your throat and of course the infamous gum problem gingivitis and I don’t mean the type of gum that you chew but the one your,,, our teeth grow out of. Also,, certain foods give you,, us,, a strong bad odor. So floss, brush, visit your dentist regualarly for teeth cleaning and of course use mouth wash and brush teeth after each meal ,, and don’t forget to also brush,, scrub your tongue. We harbor germs and such things between our taste buds. Honestly, I guarantee you his breath is not that great to smell either especially if he eats the same foods you eat and unless he constantly brushes and washes his mouth ,, which I doubt it, then he has room to complain. By the way, it is always easier to notice someone else’s body odors,, good and bad breath,, smell,, including mouth or from any orafices’ before you,,, we,, recongnize our/your own. It is possible that to some people your bf actually may smell ,, mouth, body odor worse than you. If your breath smells sour like lemon,, then,, what is his problem? Lemon or sour? or would he describe it as vomit smell? One more thing,, if he loves,, you,, and I mean loves you as in there is no other girl in the world or for that matter,, if all the women were lined up to pick anyone of them or all of them over you,, then you need to be found by the man that will not accept anyone or all the women over you. Can you believe that I feel that way about my favorite girl,, I would not take anyone of you or all of you over my one and only favorite girl,, now way jose, no how. Yes,, I know hard to believe that a man,, a person would feel that strongly about a girl. One more by the way,, if you two engage in oral s*x,, I bet he does not complain about that?

Bad Breath Causes Symptoms Information With Treatment

Chronic bad breath, known as Halitosis , does not come from the stomach. The only odor that comes from the stomach is when you burp. Everybody has bad breath from time to time, especially first thing in the morning. You also may have bad breath when you are hungry, when you are dieting, or after eating foods with a strong odor, such as garlic, onions, or pastrami. Certain foods, especially ones like garlic and onions that contain pungent oils, can contribute to bad breath because the oils are carried to your lungs and out through your mouth. Smoking is also a major cause of bad breath. If simple self-care techniques don’t solve the problem, you may want to see your dentist or doctor to rule out a more serious condition that may be causing your bad breath.

Causes of Bad Breath

The common Causes of Bad Breath :

Dentures that are not cleaned properly may be collecting bacteria and remaining food particles which cause bad breath.

One of the primary symptoms of this gum disease is foul, odorous breath, and an unpleasant taste in the mouth. This condition requires immediate care by an oral health professional.

Smoking dries out your mouth and causes its own unpleasant mouth odor. Tobacco users are also more likely to have periodontal disease, an additional source of bad breath.

The oils from garlic and onions are absorbed into your bloodstream and transferred to your lungs, where they’re expelled when you breathe out.

Insufficient saliva allows dead cells to accumulate in your mouth. The cells decompose and cause odor.

Dieters may develop unpleasant “fruity” breath from ketoacidosis, the breakdown of chemicals during fasting.

Bacteria and plaque buildup in the mouth from food caught between teeth, dentures, or dental appliances.

Symptoms of Bad Breath

Some Symptoms of Bad Breath :

Fatigue

Nasal congestion

Fever

Cough

Dental pain

Nausea

Bad breath (halitosis)

Facial pain

Difficulty breathing through your nose.

Treatment of Bad Breath

Do not smoke or use other tobacco products, such as snuff or chewing (spit) tobacco.

Avoid foods and drinks that cause bad breath, such as garlic and alcohol.

Chew sugar-free gum, suck on sugar-free mints, or drink water, especially if your mouth is dry. Try using breath sticks, which contain the ingredients found in a mouthwash and dissolve in your mouth.

Have regular dental checkups.

Floss daily.

Eat a low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

Brush your teeth, tongue, roof of your mouth, and gums at least twice a day with toothpaste.

Gargle with water.

Use a mouthwash for temporary relief of bad breath. Swish it around in your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out

Cranberries may be able to eliminate the offensive-smelling bacteria that can build up in your mouth and lead to bad breath. Apparently, the tart berries make the bacteria less sticky, so plaque is less likely to form.

and mouth wash really helps but not permanently its too expensive
there must be something one can eat or some kind of treatment
    what causes bad breath exactly???????

    • ANSWER:
Bad breath is usually caused by lots of bacteria in your mouth. Since mostly all the bacteria likes to live on your tongue, it’s easy to get rid of it all. Simply brush your tongue like you would to your teeth, only try not to go too far back, or you will trigger your gag reflex.

Another thing that causes bad breath is smelly food, like onions or garlic. To get rid of this kind of bad breath I just suggest you just thoroughly brush your teeth (and tongue!), then use mouth wash. :)

One more thing that can really help with bad breath is sugar-free gum, preferably something minty. I hope that this information helps with your search for a cure to bad breath! :)

Have the poor thing’s liver checked and also the esophagal valve that should close the entrance in the lower gullet to the stomach. It’s probably the latter ; IF SO IT MAY HEAL IN TIME BUT MAY NOT AND, EITHER WAY, THE POOR THING WILL TEND TO SUFFER THIS DREADFUL PROBLEM ALL IT’S POOR MISERABLE LIFE.

  4. QUESTION:
What are the main causes of halitosis (bad breath). A doctor diagnosed me w/ it but didn’t give treatment opts?
I went to see a doctor for issues other than halitosis, it was for some stomach issues i’d been having since getting my gallbladder removed and he wound up diagnosing me as having IBS and also halitosis. So embarrassing. He only gave me meds to help with the IBS but didn’t give me anything for the halitosis and he didn’t offer any treatment. Actually he didn’t even tell me what the diagnosis were. The way I found out was I was trying to renew my health insurance, and I put that last doctor visit on the application and the underwriters called me and told me they needed to speak with the doctor’s office and ask some questions about the visit. They put us on a 3-way call and the underwriter asked one of the staff ladies at the dr.s office what the diagnosis was and she said, IBS and halitosis. Pretty embarrassing for me but I guess it could’ve been worse, we could’ve been talking face to face and that would’ve really been embarrassing. Ok so now that I know I have it, I really want to deal with it. What should be my first step in curing the halitosis?
I already brush my teeth well at least 2 times a day and I also scrape my tongue everyday twice a day but only floss occassionally. I’d say I only floss once or twice a month. Could that be a reason for it?

    • ANSWER:
You might be surprised to learn that your halitosis and IBS are actually related.

Halitosis is really caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria in your mouth. This is why people will tell you to use mouthwash which will help kill the bacteria. But you have to consider this. Your entire digestive tract from your mouth to anus is 1 continous membrane so if you have an imbalance of bacteria in any one area, they will spread everywhere. So the point to take away from this is that because a large part of IBS is due to an imbalance between harmful and beneficial bacteria in your gut, that same imbalance will exist in your mouth thus causing your halitosis.

So if you want to actually get rid of halitosos without having to continuously use mouthwash or other very temporary fixes, you have to fix the cause of the problem which is really the imbalance of your entire digestive tract. If you do this then you IBS symptoms will get better too.

#1 Understand that sugar and processed foods feed the harmful bacteria so if you want to get rid of them then you have to stop feeding them. So cut out all sugar and processed foods from your diet.

#2 Once you’ve done #1 then you can add the missing beneficial bacteria back into your gut with the use of a good high quality probiotic like Dr. Ohirra’s.

#3 If you want further relief from IBS then you need to start cutting out the foods that are making it worse. So you can start by cutting out the most common food intolerances found in today’s society… wheat/gluten, dairy, and soy.

Also, sorry to hear about you having your gallbladder removed. This can also be a contributing factor to your stomach pain because you may not be able to digest fats very well due to decreased bile activity.

I use a product with my clients who have had their Gallbladders removed called Cholacol which is natural bile salts that will help you to properly digest fats and take the load off of your liver. You should give it a shot.

Causes and Cures for Bad Breath

Learn The Stuff Behind Bad Breath Causes and Cures

Bad breath (halitosis) is a common for many people and can be rather embarrassing. Bad breath can be a big turn off for those around you and if it is a condition that you suffer from long term you may notice that people may stand back from you when talking to you.

There are many causes of bad breath with some being chronic conditions and others being short term causes. In this article we will discuss the causes of bad breath as well as the cures.

Causes of Bad Breath
One of the very common but reasonably short term causes of bad breath is eating foods that cause bad breath with the main food being garlic. Garlic will even carry on causing bad breath for a while even after there is no trace of the garlic left in the mouth. This is because the active ingredients are absorbed into the blood stream and are then expelled by the lungs as you breathe.

Brushing and flossing do get rid part of the smell but as long as the odour continues to be expelled as you breathe there will still be a certain amount of bad breath. The good thing with garlic breath is that it will fade of and your breath will return to normal usually within a few hours.

Smoking is another substance that will cause bad breath by both the taste left in the mouth as well as the expelled odour from the lungs. Smoking also affects oral hygiene and encourages gum disease which can also be a big contributing factor to bad breath. The obvious and only way to stop bad breath caused by smoking is to give up smoking.

The most common cause of chronic bad breath is usually plaque build up which can cause small pockets to appear between the teeth and gums. These pockets then fill up with food particles and bacteria. Normal brushing and even flossing will not be able to clean these pockets completely and it needs to be done by a dental hygienist.

One of the main causes of bad breath is dry mouth. Dry mouth can be caused by allergies and can also be caused by some medications such as asthma and bronchitis inhalers. These medications can have an impact on your saliva production and actually a reduction in the amount saliva produced. This causes your mouth to become dry and as a result there is less oxygen present which makes ideal conditions for bacteria to thrive. The build up of bacteria in the mouth and on the tongue is what causes the bad breath.

Another cause of bad breath is post-nasal drip which can be as a result of an allergy. Post-nasal drip is caused by excessive mucus being produced by the sinuses which is a common reaction to allergy. This mucus is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria growth and the bacteria will feed off this condition which will result in bad breath. This cause will usually be accompanied by a bad taste in your mouth.

The final cause of bad breath is a possible allergy to certain foods. Food intolerance can have many different symptoms and one common symptom is the production of excess gas in the stomach. This gas can often reflux back up and settle in the mouth causing bad breath.

In some cases bad breath can be caused by a more serious underlying condition so if the usual bad breath remedies do not get rid of the problem then you may need to visit your doctor.

Cures for Bad Breath
There are many cures and remedies for bad breath but to get the best result it is best to try and identify the cause of the bad breath. By attacking the cause will give you the best results.

Here are some cures that you can try for bad breath:

The crucial point is to ensure that you practice sound oral hygiene. Brush your teeth and tongue twice a day and floss once a day. Research has shown that people that floss do have better breath than people who do not floss. Flossing will help to remove trapped food particles and prevent them from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria.

If you have dry mouth you may be able to get an artificial saliva substitute from your dentist. If you have an allergy that is causing your dry mouth then it would pay to try to identify your allergen and work on avoiding that allergen.

Visit a dental hygienist regularly for a professional clean. You should have this done every six months to make sure of no plaque build up between teeth.

Minimize the food supply for bacteria. The anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath feed on protein rich foods. Vegetarians who eat less protein foods have much less problems with bad breath.

Using mouthwashes too often can not always be that good for you as they contain chemicals, however you can use a mouthwash of baking soda dissolved in water daily without any risk. This is a natural remedy and is very safe to use daily and can help to keep the tongue clean and free from bacteria. Squeezed lemon into water can also be used daily as a gargle and will prevent bad breath from reoccurring.

Taking yoghurt regularly can eliminate your bad breath and prevent it reoccurring. Yoghurt contains good bacteria and has a very good overall benefit for your health.

Foods rich in zinc can also help to keep bacteria under control and prevent bad breath.

All of these remedies are very good so if you have no luck with them there could be another cause that you will need to see your doctor to get diagnosed so that you can take the necessary steps to heal yourself and heal your bad breath.

  5. QUESTION:
my boyfriend has a litlle problem with bad breath, what causes it and what are the cures for it besides gum?

    • ANSWER:
bad breath may sometimes be caused by the foods you eat, but often its the work of germs in your mouth which are found naturally.

you can decrease this by using antiseptics such as listerine, which will actually kill the germs that cause bad breath (just like the commercial). they now have them in little “to-go” packs which dissolve in your mouth. Brushing your teeth after meals will also decrease bacteria in the mouth.

Typically gum will not do anything, other than temporarily mask the odor. Worse, if it’s one with sugar, all you’re doing is providing more food for the bacteria.

What Are The Causes of Bad Breath?

  3. QUESTION:
What causes bad breath and how do you get rid of it?
I already brush my teeth twice a day. I AM NOT THAT NASTY. Demi Lovato said in an interview that she drinks a lot of water during the day. Does that really help?

    • ANSWER:
Bad breath stems from many things. Teeth that need to be pulled out can cause bad breath. The things you eat might cause it. My advice would be to clean your tongue either by brushing it or scraping it with a tongue cleaner. Bad breath can come from the filmyresiduee from your tongue also.

  4. QUESTION:
What causes bad breath and how to get rid of it?
I always have a terrible taste in my mouth (you know when you can just tell it stinks) and It doesn’t go away. Sure its better after ive brushed my teeth but then about an hour later it just starts to feel uicky again.
And the morning is the worse, wake up with such a dry rank mouth, and it takes like a litre of water and wating for an hour to make it feel better. And get that white coating on your tounge.

So are there any tips? thanks.

    • ANSWER:
You might have cryptic tonsils. Take a flashlight and shine it on your tonsils. Take a Q-tip or something else pointy (but not too sharp) and start poking. Chances are you will see some yellowish stuff ooze out. I had this problem for years before I figured it out. Good luck to you.

  5. QUESTION:
What causes bad breath in Chihuahuas?
I have a 6 yr. old Chihuahua. One year ago the vet removed a bunch of teeth, but the bad breath is back worse than ever. It is almost as if removing the teeth helped none at all. His breath is really bad and brushing the teeth and the mouth wash prescribed by the vet does no good.

    • ANSWER:
Welcome to the world of Chihuahuas. Even the younger dogs 1 yr old and up get bad breath. I attribute a good deal of it to the food. Try a natural dog food without alot of preservatives. Also after he eats check his ‘cheeks’ near his back teeth area for stored food. This chewed up paste gums up and begins to breakdown with the enzymes in the dog’s mouth and causes odor. It is almost like rotting dog food smell.
You can also get small breath mints like BreathAssure for dogs at stores PetSmart, Petland to try if you can get him to take them like a treat.
The teeth are always the likely culpret but if the vet checked then that is not the problem. This means it is coming from deeper in the digestive track. By some chance did your vet do complete bloodwork. many health problems can cause bad breath.
I took my Chihuahua to a very educated vet to have his teeth cleaned and some removed. She smelled his breath and said that he was dehydrated due to infection possibly in the kidneys and that he could have an enlarged prostate. She ordered a CBC bloodwork test which confirmed his kidney infection and manually checked his prostrate whiched was enlarged and he needed neutered. She said that she knew by the particular odors of his breath what the possible problems were and the tests confirmed it after the fact.
Ask the vet to do the extensive bloodwork and check that all of his levels are within normal range.
