How to Tell if You Have Bad Breath – 4 Quick and Easy Methods to Determine Whether You Have it

Okay, let’s say you have a date with an extremely gorgeous damsel. Physically, you’re nothing short of stunning complete with a million dollar smile thanks to your shiny white teeth. However, paranoia suddenly hits you like a one-ton anvil. What if your breath stinks? Your dreamy evening might end up becoming a disaster of catastrophic proportion. Imagine trying to give the lovely lass a kiss only for her to react with an expression of crinkling agony. I’ve experienced this kind of situation before and believe me; the feeling of humiliation is beyond words. So how on earth can you tell if your breath is bad? Alright, quit being a worry wort now because I’m going to share four very fast and ridiculously easy methods to help you find out if your breath smells like Don Juan, or similar to a bunch of rotten eggs (my breath used to smell like the latter by the way).

1. The spoon method – Get a spoon and flip it upside down. Next, insert the spoon in your mouth and place it at the very back part of your tongue. Now scrape that section of your tongue gently with the spoon. Give it a few scrapes and then take the spoon out to discover what kind of material that came off the back of your tongue. Go ahead and smell it. No foul smelling odor means that you’re in luck; otherwise you might want to find something to cover the smell before picking up your date.

2. The saliva method – This is by far the most popular method to determine the quality of your breath. Simply lick the back of your hand and then wait for a minute or so to allow the saliva to dry up a bit. Now give the back of your hand a good whiff. Smell anything awful or perhaps nothing at all? If it’s the former, grab a toothbrush, toothpaste, and some mints pronto!

3. The baggie method – Sometimes the saliva method may not work especially if the source of your bad breath originates from the nose. Believe it or not, your nose is also capable of producing unpleasant odor usually due to either a serious sinus infection or impending of the nasal passages. Anyway you can find out by grabbing a small piece of plastic baggie, preferably the Ziploc ones. Now blow into the baggie and quickly seal it up tightly. Don’t open it just yet. Give it a few minutes and then you may proceed to unseal the baggie and take a whiff.

4. The lab rat method – How about asking someone to be a lab rat for your breath test? If you’re not a loner or an anti-social person, then this is the simplest way to find out if you have bad breath. Ask a close buddy or a good old relative to act as your very own (to put it in a nicer term) breath analyzer. If they smell anything insidious, get them to determine whether the source originates from your mouth or nose so you may take the necessary action. For this method, I believe it is best that you offer them a nice treat to return the favor especially if your breath test turns out to be on the negative side.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
I always have bad breath! How can I get rid of it?
I always have bad breath! I don’t have braces, and I brush my teeth for at least 3 minutes, twice a day. People say that you’ll have bad breath if you don’t brush your tongue, but I do. It’s really embarrassing! How can I get rid of it?

    • ANSWER:

  2. QUESTION:
Does the taste of bad breath always necessarily mean that you have bad breath?
Okay, there have been some times that I could taste bad breath in my mouth after brushing my teeth or eating some mints, but im not too sure if that means i do have bad breath. I also want to know if there are instant ways to discreetly get rid of bad breath in public. Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
yes i think it does. usually when i taste bad breath in the morning thats when its worst. lol. brush (especially your tongue because thats where all the bacteria is) floss and drink water with meals to help prevent this. also, gargling this: a teaspoon of honey and a bit of cinnamon mixed in boiling water should keep your mouth tasting and smelling fresh, good luck :)

  3. QUESTION:
How do you get rid of bad breath at parties?
I have bad breath. I know for a fact. Yet, when I’m at parties, it becomes the worst! How do you get rid of bad breath at parties when you have nothing that can help your breath get better?

    • ANSWER:
Have you tried eating parsley, dried or fresh. Parsley is a natural remedy for halitosis.

  4. QUESTION:
How can you let someone know they have bad breath without hurting their feelings?
Without hurting someone’s feelings or being too direct, how can you let someone know that they have bad breath?

My teacher has bad breath and so does the girl next to me.

I have thought of offering them mints, but even that may be a bit direct.
    Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Oh man…bad breath drives me crazy!! I dated someone who always chewed gum or mints…and after a while stopped. He had bad breath 80% of the time. I finally told him…I can’t remember how the conversation came up…and he didn’t believe it. So now he still had bad breath and I got teased for mentioning it. No help.

So though you can’t fix the problem of their bad breath, at least you can fix the problem for you having to smell it. I would definitely pop a mint in your mouth (breathe out of your mouth to help camouflage their bad smell) and offer them one constantly. People tend to catch the hint or at least joke about having bad breath when offered gum/mints alot. Plus, when your teacher leans in to talk to you, lean back a little, just slightly so he/she can catch a hint.

      Hope this helps!

  5. QUESTION:
How can you get rid of bad breath for forever?
I have bad odar breath everyday i dont know why. I brush my teeth 3 times, my gum, my, tongue, and my teeth, it helps alittle but then the smell just comes back. Please help. And i never talk in school cause of it or anywhere. Please help me thank you

    • ANSWER:
Use a mouth wash with alcohol like Oral B (the kind with mint). Have a strong mint like a mint flavored tic tac. Get a tongue brush, like Ora B. Odor usually grows on the tongue, and this helps to gently yet effectively clean it off. Talk to your dentist about your hygiene issues.

10 Step Guide to Avoiding a Person With Bad Breath

10 Step Guide to Avoiding a Person with Bad Breath

Can anyone define for me the definition of Bad Breath? I define it as someone with unpleasant and terribly offensive breath odor. If the person consistently has this offensive order, then it is Halitosisa.which is a nicer word to use, definingabad breath, occurring on a daily basis!

There are several reasons why a person may have odor to the breath. One of the reasons is the body ridding itself of excess acetone, not to mention that there coulda very well bea a break down of proteins in the mouth. Another is if a person is ill and has to have a Nasogastric Tube in place. I experienced this particular tube myself when I was hospitalized a few years ago. It is a tube placed through the nose or mouth to the stomach. I could only imagine what my breath must have smelled likeaduring that time and I am sure that I offended lots of family members and friends who came to visit me. Lastly, there is chronic kidney failure, which can add to breath- odor.

There are several causes of bad breath, such as: poor dental hygiene, eating certain foods like garlic, raw onions or drinking coffee. There are also cavities, smoking, alcoholism, throat infections, sinusitis, Gum Disease and drugs, not to mention a few others, that can cause the rise of the smell of feces to occur in the mouth.

One important thing about bad breath is that it doesn’t discriminate. No matter how much money one has, the high status held in position, grace, charm and beauty, intelligence and expensive cars and clothesaif your breath smellsa.none of it matters! All anyone can smell is that horrific odor. You best believe, my friend, that the bad breath is all that they will remember about you too. Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How to get rid of bad breath in the morning?
I brush my teeth once at night with a mouth wash and once in the morning after I get out of bed. Every other nights, I use water pik substituting for floss, but I use mouth wash every night and use the tongue cleaner every night as well. How can I get rid of bad breath? Any tips? Please explain.

    • ANSWER:
You will never totally eliminate bad breath, especially in the morning. Your mouth is not eating or talking…therefore, bacteria lies dormant inside during the night. This is what causes bad breath. It doesn’t matter that you brush, floss, mouth wash prior to bed. Bacteria will still lie dormant in an unused salivated cave. Time to accept it and deal with it.

  2. QUESTION:
How to get rid of really bad breath?
Over the past few days my husband has had really bad breath and it was really bad especially over the weekend. I could smell it from his breath and when he breathed through his nose. He tried rinsing his mouth with mouthwash and of course he brushed his teeth several times. He also tried lemon water and his breath still smelled funky. What would cause really bad breath and what can he do to get rid of the bad breath?

    • ANSWER:
Maybe it’s his sinuses and post-nasal drip causing the bad odor. Maybe a sinus decongestant can make a difference.

  3. QUESTION:
How do I deal with bad breath after I got my wisdom teeth pulled?
I got my wisdom teeth removed Thursday. It is now Tuesday, the pain has gone away for the most part but now I am dealing with bad breath. I had all 4 taken out, the top two were out of the gums, so I have holes where I get food stuck but its a lot easier to clean cause I can reach it with my tongue and a q-tip.

However, my bottom ones had to be cut into, I can barely even see the hole. If I spread my cheeks wide enough, I can see some red where I believe the incision was made.

How do I deal with this bad breath? How do I clean my holes? Will I have to worry about this until the holes fill up?

Also, I noticed that all the stitches dissolved Monday night, which is 4 days after the operation. Is this normal?
It is very hard to clean the bottom holes especially since I barely can even see the holes, I can’t really get my tooth brush back there and I don’t know if food is stuck there.

    • ANSWER:
To deal with your holes, gargle with warm salt water. You want to make sure that your holes are clean until they fill in, if not, it may cause an infection. As for the bad breath, scrub the hell out of your tongue, and just make sure those sockets are clean. Stitches dissolving, is normal. A lot of the times its easier on the patient and the doc if the stitches dissolve. Its normal, there are two kinds of stitches (sutures) that i am aware of, the silk, and the gutta. one dissolves and one has to be cut and removed. You’ll be ok, just keep the sockets clean! Get well!

  4. QUESTION:
How can I fight bad breath with invisalign?
I can’t really chew gum and I get very bad breath so how can I keep my breath fresh with Invisalign braces? I already brush, floss, and rinse twice a day.

    • ANSWER:
Maybe you are not aware of the latest information about the cause of bad breath? The tongue, or at least the top of the tongue where bacteria grow and produce bad breath. Your braces may be causing some amount of bad breath, but I believe most of your bad breath is coming from the top of your tongue. I also learned about a great new tongue cleaner, OraBrush, which can only be acquired on the internet. Here is their site: http://www.orabrush.com/halitosis.php

  5. QUESTION:
How far back on your tounge do I brush to help eliminate bad breath?
So I have bad breath and I’m trying to work on it. I brush twice a day and use mouthwash twice a day and I still have very bad breath!!!! Help? I know brushing your tounge can help and I think I need to brush farther back, but I can’t because anymore and I’ll touch my uvula. Is that too far back? Can anyone help with bad breath in general?

    • ANSWER:
I would also check with your dentist to see if your gums have any infection going on. The bacteria that cause that disease smell very bad. If you have tartar under the gums that you can’t see, you can brush all day long, floss tongue scrape, swish w listerine and that smell will not go away! You have to have that tartar physically removed by a professional. Also, if you have a tooth that is decayed, that can smell bad. Huge tonsils with pits can also create a sulfuric smell. The best toothpaste and rinse I have found for breath is Crest Pro Health. Breath RX also has an amazing tongue scraper and it can be washed in the dishwasher.

Also, sweet-smelling fruity acetone breath could be a sign of diabetes.

Why Does My Breath Smell Bad While Dieting?

Have you ever noticed that you have had bad breath while dieting? Lots of people have noticed that while the pounds might be dropping off like crazy, their breath is getting worse and worse. This is actually very normal, and a lot of people experience this. You may notice that if you eat more proteins and especially on low-carb diets, you will suffer from bad breath, or halitosis. There is a reason why this actually happens.

When our bodies go without our usual intake of food, after a while they will start to burn fat to use for energy. When our bodies are in this process of burning deposits of fat, it is called ‘Ketosis.’ You may have heard this word related to some popular low-carb diets. There has been a lot of controversy around this process, but it is perfectly natural to the body when it begins to get rid of the extra fat in our bodies.

The process of Ketosis burns all types of fats except one. This particular fat cannot be burned by Ketosis. It is called ‘Acetone.’ While Ketosis gets rid of the other fats, Acetone gets excreted as waste in our bodies. This usually comes out through the urine or the breath. This is why we experience bad breath while we’re on diets. It is actually perfectly normal. However, we do not want to deal with bad breath. It has an impact on our lives that we do not necessarily want to deal with, especially if we want to keep our spouses close! Here are some things that you can do to ensure that breath smells nice while dieting.

* Be very thorough during your usual dental hygiene routine. Take your time and don’t rush through brushing your teeth.
* Use dental floss to completely clean between teeth. This also makes sure that there are no food particles between teeth that will decay and cause bad breath.
* Use mouth wash to kill harmful bacteria that can make your breath smells bad.
* Use a tongue scraper to remove any pathogens that are on the surface of your tongue. These pathogens produce compounds which escalate the problem.
* Drink 8 full glasses of water each day. First of all, water dilutes ketones in the body. This will help control the smell of your breath, or at least reduce it some. Second of all, a dry mouth can produce bad breath even worse than a normal mouth. Drinking water keeps you hydrated, and keeps your mouth moist.

Applying these tips and ideas right now will help you eliminate your bad breath even when you are on your favorite diet.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Why does chewing gum later on give you bad breath?
yeah at the beginning it give you fresh minty breath but later on after like, i dont know, 30 mins or so you get bad breath.
    Why?
Is there a way to prevent it?

    • ANSWER:
When you first start chewing the gum, the flavors mask any bad breath. The sugar in the gum actually promotes the growth of bacteria on your tongue. Drink plenty of water and avoid sugars and dairy products. I know easy to say but they promote bad breath. Read this free ebook, it explains what causes bad breath and how to get rid of it for good even if you do eat sugar or dairy products.

  2. QUESTION:
Why does chewing gum later give you bad breath?
yeah at the beginning it give you fresh minty breath but later on after like, i dont know, 30 mins or so you get bad breath.
    Why?
Is there a way to prevent it?

    • ANSWER:
Because the taste goes away. The flavor imparted gets diluted in the saliva. Keep on replenishing !!

Also, the gum itself doesn’t cause the bad breath…used up gum just does not mask it anymore.

  3. QUESTION:
Why do you get bad breath when you sleep?
Compared to when your awake your breath doesn’t get that bad as the so called “morning breath”. What keeps your mouth from not smelling as horrible when your awake as to your breath when you sleep?
Germs using the bathroom? Thats gross but interesting.

    • ANSWER:
The flow of saliva slows down during sleep. As a result, mouths don’t get the same level of oxygen as they do while we’re active. This allows anaerobic bacteria, which don’t need oxygen, to thrive. “The waste products from these bacteria often contain sulfur — and those compounds of sulfur are what we smell.”

Onions are also nasty culprits of this type of bad breath because they contain sulfur. So limit your raw onion snacking habits, and you’re ahead of the game.

According to BreezeCare, there are additional causes for morning breath. Mucus in your nose can thicken while you sleep, and your tongue falls to the back of your throat — both of which provide welcome environments for anaerobic bacteria.

Treatments for bad breath abound, however the two common solutions are to brush your tongue to remove excess plaque, and the use of an antimicrobial mouthwash. Good luck, and may your breath be as fresh as a Tic Tac.

  4. QUESTION:
why do people with bad breath always seem to be in your face?
Seems like whenever someone/friend had very bad breath they always want to be talking all up in your face, and you dont have the courage too tell them their breath stinks. So you stand fidgetting holding your breath, turning blue and getting a major headache.

    • ANSWER:
Man,that’s the worst.I was talking to this little short guy that I went to camp with last summer, and I don’t know what his problem was but he apparently never discovered deodorant or tooth paste…And he would hound me like a little ankle biter, trying to make himself look taller and getting right in my face.It was like he was trying to make up for inferior size =P

  5. QUESTION:
Can still having your wisdom teeth cause you to have bad breath?
If I get my wisdom teeth pulled, hopefully will my bad breath problem be gone by chance? I know a lot of food gets trapped down there and I can’t floss back there because they’re halfway out of my gums, plus I have like a flap over them where the food gets trapped under. I put my finger back there one time and smelled my finger, and I was like “Whew!”, I’m thinking I need to go ahead and get them taking out. I feel no pain from them but I think that’s the reason why my breath smells bad all the time. I keep mints on me. Do you think this is a good idea to go ahead and get them removed?

    • ANSWER:
your bad breath should start to go away. but dont hold your breath(no pun intended) while you are healing the holes from your teeth are still bleeding causing you to smell horribly bad

Bad Breath- What May be Causing It?

Putrid! Awful smell, Hell rising from your mouth. It must be halitosis, or simply bad breath.

Many people are put off by halitosis. If you’re lucky the person you are talking to may not say anything but at any rate, halitosis is embarrassing. But what may be causing it?

Poor dental hygiene

Among the most common causes of bad breathe, poor dental hygiene takes the primary position. Failure to cleanse and remove food debris from the mouth could instantly cause bad breath. Ingredients from tooth paste and mouthwashes are specifically manufactured to improve breath and to cover any traces of unwanted smell.

Hunger

One of the most common causes of bad breath is hunger. For most people, hunger only leads to grumbling sounds from the stomach but for some, bad breath is an obvious symptom of bad smelling breath.

Dry mouth

One of the most mundane reasons why bad breath develops is dry mouth. If the mouth fails to receive substantial moisture for an extended period of time, chances are the mouth will develop a smell. This often happens in the morning right after you wake up but it could also happen when you don’t open your mouth for a few hours. Dry mouth or xerostomia is a condition of lowered production of saliva. On the average, your mouth produces 4 to 6 cups of saliva per day. A slightly lower rate could lead to xerostomia. This condition is characterized by excessive dryness of the mouth but under aggravated condition, xerostomia could lead to burning sensation in the mouth. The leading cause of mouth dryness is insufficient supply of water and other fluids in the body and the use of certain medications. Up to date, there are some 400 identified prescription and non-prescription drugs that could cause mouth dryness.

Xerostomia leads to bad breath because it causes concentration of odor-producing bacteria. Due to insufficient production of saliva, there is lesser fluid to flush and cleanse the bacteria in the mouth. This leads to the accumulation of bacteria in the oral cavity. A dry mouth readies the condition in the mouth for the Volatile Sulfur Compounds to be sent to the air.

Something you just ate. Some foods like garlic, cabbage and onion, AND beverages like coffee, alcohol and tea could instantly cause bad breath after consumption.

Smoking

Smoking residues such as nicotine and tar could add smell to the mouth. These residues would coat the tongue, the teeth and even the lungs which can further inhibit the circulation of good smelling breath.

Systematic diseases

Several diseases could cause and contribute to bad breath. Such conditions include liver failure, renal failure and infections, infections in the lower respiratory tract, metabolic dysfunctions, carcinoma, and diabetes milletus.

Knowing the cause alone may not be helpful though if further actions are not taken. Before you go to the doctor, perform self-examination first. Apart from giving you an idea of how serious your oral problem is, self-diagnosis could also help you start a conscious preventive practice towards better smelling breath.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
what could be the problem with my gastrointestional tract that could cause bad breath and body odor?
has good oral hygiene and wash every day with excellent soap. i have had a very bad case of bad breath and also a bad taste in mouth that wont go away. even after washing the body odor doesn’t ease up some. they say that sometimes bad breath can come from a problem with the stomach what could this be. please help in that my social life is gone. a few mints and even chewing gum doesnt help. and also no dental problems either

    • ANSWER:
Empty stomach, digestive disorders like infection of the digestive tract, constipation and infection of the stomach are some digestion related problems that make up the second most common list of causes of halitosis or bad breath.

Garlic and curry, and other similarly spiced up foods which basically contain onion, hot peppers and other spices. Spices tend to stay and re-circulate through essential oils they leave in your mouth.

Cheese – It gets a hold on your breath and doesn’t let it go. Sometimes, other dairy products too are responsible for bad breath.

Fish like tuna and anchovies, and spicy deli meats like salami and pepperoni also leave their respective peculiar smell long after you have had them.

While there are plenty of short-term products such as gums and fresheners on the market, most do not last more than a couple of hours and tend to only mask the bad breath rather than address underlying causes.

For this reason, many people are now turning to natural herbal and homeopathic ingredients such as Kali. Phos, Silica and Sweet Fennel to successfully help them with halitosis. Kali. Phos is well known for its antiseptic and cleansing properties and is effective at addressing putrefactive conditions such as halitosis, foul smelling flatulence and stools.

Silica works by cleansing the cells of toxins and ridding the body of bad odors, while addressing some of the underlying causes of bad breath such as gum disease, sinus infections and mouth abscess. Lastly, sweet fennel has a long history of use for treating digestion problems and is a popular aid to sweeten the breath.

Halitosis Treatment – Your Hay Fever May Be Giving You Bad Breath

I’ll bet you never thought that hay fever could cause bad breath, but it’s true. Hay fever strikes when you are having an allergic reaction to something in the air. In most cases it is some sort of pollen or fungus spores that sets off the attack. As you breathe these micro particles into your nose, throat, and lungs they become irritated. Then your body goes to work to get rid of the foreign substance. The eyes start to water and feel itchy this makes them look and feel puffy. As the eyes water they drain into the nostrils, which are already becoming inflamed themselves. This put mucus production into overdrive and your nose starts running. This causes post nasal drip. Odor causing bacteria love this environment.

Your breath will start to smell very bad very quickly. At this point you need a halitosis treatment that will work fast. Normally you won’t even be aware that you have a problem, your nose is clogged and you won’t smell what others smell. If your nose isn’t clogged then you could have a rancid smell coming from your nose as you breathe. This is sometimes referred to as having a halitosis nose. Our natural reaction when we begin to feel stuffy is to go straight for the antihistamine or some other cold medicine. The problem here is that while they work well to slow down or even stop mucus production which does stop the runny nose, it does this by drying out the nose and throat. This in turn creates the perfect environment for the odor causing bacteria to multiply. This can cause you to have a strong odor coming from your mouth and nose.

The best halitosis treatment for this is to head it off early by washing your face and hands as soon as you start to feel the hay fever coming on. Next drink plenty of cool fresh water. Taking the medication that will make you feel better is always a good thing, just be aware that they will dry out your mouth. If you keep your mouth moist and clean you can greatly reduce the chances of your breath becoming offensive. Oh course you must brush and floss your teeth as well as brushing your tongue at least twice a day or you will be doomed to failure before you’ve even begun your battle for fresh breath.

It is always a good idea to cut way back on dairy products when you are suffering with hay fever or a cold. The fat content in the dairy causes the mucus to thicken and make your cough worse. If you switch to a low fat skim milk temporarily until you feel better it will help. Again I mention because it is so important, drink plenty of water. It has been widely reported that you should drink six to eight 8 oz. glasses of water each and every day. The water helps on so many levels to help both you and your breath smell better. The water helps to remove toxins and bacteria from your mouth and your intestines by helping your body to flush them out.

If your nose gets real stuffed up and you want to clean it out here is an all natural saltwater solution that not only unclogs your nostrils it will help remove the odor causing bacteria hiding in your sinuses. Use an 8 oz. Cup of warm not hot distilled water (distilled water has fewer impurities). Add tsp. of non-iodized salt such as Epsom’s salt. The non-iodized salt seems to be less irritating to the nostrils. Mix well then add a pinch of baking soda and mix. You can use a rubber ear cleaning bulb and it will work fine or what works better is the little pot that you pour the salt water in one nostril and it flushes through your sinus cavity and comes out the other nostril. You will need to follow the instructions that come with the nasal pot. If you follow these simple steps you should get through your hay fever attack without offending anyone with your breath.

  4. QUESTION:
    treatment for halitosis in dogs?

    • ANSWER:
Just like in humans, halitosis can be a sign of dental disease or some other health problem, so the very first step is to take your pooch to the vet. Chances are pretty good your dog is going to need to have his teeth cleaned. There are tooth brushes specifically designed for dogs on the market, and these are great for reducing tartar build up and plaque in dogs. There are highly palatable toothpastes on the market as well that will help build fido’s tolerance to having his teeth brushed. But definitely a trip to the doggy doc. Gum disease can seriously shorten your pup’s life span.

  5. QUESTION:
what is the treatment in halitosis?

    • ANSWER:
Brush your teeth and don’t forget your tongue

What Is Halitosis?

What Are The Main Reasons For Bad Breath

Halitosis, or bad breath, has many causes. However, its effects are the same the world over. The best way to prevent halitosis, however, is to understand it. Different types of bad breath are cured in different ways. If you are using the wrong approach, you may not understand why the steps you are taking are not working.

Main Reasons For Bad Breath
Here are some of the most common reasons for bad breath, and what you can do about them.

1. Tongue
The most common place for breath odor to occur is on the tongue. Large amounts of natural bacteria can be found on the back of the tongue, and may not be disturbed over the course of the day. Since this part of the tongue is not frequently cleaned, these bacteria can thrive and emit unpleasant odors. Most of these odors are caused by proteins breaking down into bad smelling gases. This is why your breath may smell more after eating certain foods.

Fortunately, bad breath located at the back of the tongue is relatively easily treated. Just clean your tongue gently with a scraper or other implement designed for the purpose a few times per day. Be sure not to apply too much pressure and damage the tongue, and do not use a toothbrush. Brushing the back of the tongue can cause inadvertent gagging, which can be very unpleasant. Mouthwashes, gargled once or twice a day, can also reduce smell emanating from the back of the tongue.

2. Dental Works
Other areas of the mouth can also provide reasons for bad breath. If you have dental work that has caused food to become trapped in your teeth, have an abscess, niches in your gum that can harbor bacteria, or do not clean your dentures properly, you may discover bad smells emanating from your mouth.

The solutions for these problems vary depending on what’s wrong. Bad dental work has to be corrected by a professional. Abscesses are dangerous to health, and should be treated immediately. Problems like trapped food and dirty dentures can be treated by more thorough cleaning.

3. Gum Diseases
Some people who have gum disease may also find that their breath is particularly bad. Bacteria growing below the gum line can produce a foul smell. However, this does not happen in everyone.

4. Nose
Oddly, another place that causes bad breath is the nose. Sometimes, the breath from the nose can smell, but breath from the mouth will not. In these cases, the problem is likely caused by a sinus infection, which should be treated appropriately.

5. Tonsils
Another of the reasons for bad breath is the tonsils. Very few people actually have this problem, but if you do, it is a serious one. Around five percent of people with very bad smelling breath suffer from putrefaction of the tonsils. This should be seen to by a doctor as soon as possible.

Conclusion
As you can see, there are many reasons for your bad breath. You will need to identify the cause before you can do something about them.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Halitosis?!?
I dated this guy about a year ago. I liked him until he opened his mouth..the odor wasnt foul, but it wasnt pleasant either… I have been with him after he brushed his teeth and the smell was still there, just a little masked.. I am assuming he had halitosis.. what can be done about that if brushing wont work? And how is it caused? Can it be spread?

    • ANSWER:
Bacteria between the teeth and gums. Need to do a very thorough job of brushing, flossing, mouthwash. Also could be from what he ate or digestive issues. Oral health issues can be the indicator of many other health issues including cardiovascular disease.

  2. QUESTION:
    halitosis?
before i got braces i had fresh, controllable breath but i didnt brush my teeth enough times when i had braces so now i got halitosis. and i have very good oral hygiene right now. i’ve been using antiseptic mouthwash for about 5 months now but it still doesnt go away. please give me some suggestions on what else i can do?

    • ANSWER:
Bad breath could be caused by a cavity, but more often it is caused by a combination of gum disease and bacteria on the tongue. Floss after eating. Flossing is more important than brushing. Flossing will normally cause the gums to heal.

And every time you brush your teeth, brush your tongue. When you are done brushing your tongue, it should look red and healthy, not grey. And then use a good antiseptic mouthwash.

      Now kiss me!

  3. QUESTION:
What cause canine halitosis and what can cure it?
My aunt has a Jack Russell that has cainine halitosis and we’ve been wondering what causes it and what can cure it. Her dog is nine or ten years old.

    Answers appreciated! Thank-you.

Halitosis is bad breath, just so everyone knows.

    • ANSWER:
Bad breath is usually cause by periodontal disease in dogs. Check his teeth and see if they are white, or if they are yellowed an covered in plaque. In all likelihood there is a need for a dental cleaning.

This is a relatively minor surgery. The dog is anesthetized and the teeth are scaled, polished and sometimes treated with fluoride. The dog must be anesthetized in order for the teeth to be cleaned above the gum line. Depending on the state of the teeth there may be some extractions.

      http://www.marvistavet.com/html/periodontal_disease_and_dental.html

There’s not much to be done at home if a full dental is needed. To help prevent the need for this in the future the best thing is to brush the dog’s teeth regularly. Oral rinses, dental chews, and dental diets can all help but are not as effective as brushing.

I had fecal breath odor for YEARS. Talked to many doctors who I am sure thought that I was crazy….I finally had a friend who suffers too, send me a eBook he bought 5 or 6 months ago he ask me how his breath smelt and I didn’t smell a thing. He said the eBook amongst much else had him stop eating dairy food/ soft drinks and coffee/tea. So I’m like reading it and doing all the stuff it says to do. Thinking this has to be bull. But after a few days my tongue started turning red and felt nice. I worked up the courage to ask a friend how my breath smelt and hes like I don’t smell anything. Now I’m thinking all those years of humiliation and I could have solved it ffs! There is a site about it called Oraltech Labs When I read the site I felt sorry for the guy as he clearly had a real tough time with his bad breath, which pretty much ruined his school years. What is Bad Breath and Causes of Bad Breath

What to Do If Your Lover Complains You Have Chronic Bad Breath?

Chronic bad breath is a common predicament – and if you have it, you might have gotten it from bad brushing habits, or eating too many garlic-laden foods. The stench it leaves on your mouth is often enough to turn off your colleagues while you are talking to them – so imagine what your lover would say about it. If your lover is already complaining constantly about it, you better look for bad breath remedies before it’s too late. Here are tips and suggestions on what to do about bad breath so that you can have a fresher mouth – and possibly a better relationship.

How To Get Rid Of Bad Breath

a Drink lots of water.
a Brush your teeth at least twice a day. If possible, do it after every meal.
a Do not forget to floss your teeth.
a Avoid eating too much sweets or sticky food. Sugar tends to stay between the teeth and cause bad breath.
a Use a good mouth rinse.
a Change your toothbrush at least once every two months. Old brushes don’t do the job as well as new ones can, and they’re also highly susceptible to keeping bacteria.

Halitosis is often a sign of bacteria build up in your mouth. Bacteria, of course, can come from the air pollution, the food that you eat, and even your saliva. Usually, a good vigorous toothbrush, as well as rinsing with mouthwash, can usually solve the problem. The bad breath cure is usually as simple as following the proper mouth and tooth cleaning habits. You should never be too lazy to drink lots of water, or brush your teeth at night. It will benefit you not only in health terms, but with how pleased your partner will be that you do not have halitosis constantly anymore.

How to Get Rid Of Chronic Bad Breath a.k.a Halitosis

How to cure halitosis can be as simple as following all the steps that have been mentioned above. But if you have done all these measures, and your bad breath still persists throughout the day, then your chronic halitosis might already be a symptom of a more serious problem such as gum disease, or tooth decay. If this is the case, visit the dentist for a check-up, a proper tooth cleaning, or medication.

There are also various alternative remedies you can try, which are not only very powerful, but also fast acting, and very friendly on the pocket. You can try these remedies when you have tried all options and nothing has worked. Hopefully, these can do the trick, and you will end up not only with fresh breath, but a happier relationship with your lover.

Bad Breath, Halitosis, Tonsil Stones - TheraBreath

Laser Cryptolysis And Halitosis

Cryptolysis is known as a surgical treatment which is used to take care of the causes underlying bad breath (halitosis). Cryptolysis is a non-invasive treatment method that is conducted with no need of general anesthesia. It makes use of CO2 laser technologies to do away with halitosis. So, so how exactly does cryptolysis function to stop halitosis?

The oral mucous membrane is made up of crypts that are somewhat deep pits, or invaginations within the mucosal lining of oral structures. The tonsils consist of the deepest crypts which are also several. In these kinds of crypts, food particles collect and invite bacteria which decompose these particles. When sulfur producing bacteria invade the tonsillar crypts, halitosis is pronounced. Research has shown that sulfur producing bacteria are the main reason behind halitosis which is immune to treatment. The build up of food debris, white blood cells, bacteria and cellular debris within the tonsillar crypts can lead to the formation of tonsillar stones which can worsen halitosis even additionally. Cryptolysis eliminates the crypts of the tonsils that happen to be the principle source of halitosis in many patients. Occasionally, cryptolysis can be carried out on the gums because they include crypts which can predispose to halitosis.

Cryptolysis entails making use of laser to remove the crypts within the tonsils and/or the gums. The laser smoothes out your tonsillar crypts; therefore, lowers the general surface area of the mucosal surface of the tongue which reduces the area available for sulfur producing bacteria. The application of laser incorporates destroying the crypts without eliciting the formation of excessive scar tissue. The operation is frequently carried out using local anesthesia. Over fifty percent of the patients who go through cryptolysis are completely halitosis-free after just one 30 minute treatment visit. Most patients require no more than 3 treatment sessions to eliminate halitosis entirely.

Cryptolysis is now considered one of the most hassle-free treatment plans for halitosis. It is a method that can be performed while on an out-patient basis and needs only topical anesthesia. In addition, the price of the operation is rather low. A cryptolysis procedure session normally costs less than 1/10 of that of a tonsillectomy. On the other hand, the efficiency of cryptolysis is undeniable. More than 96% of patients with halitosis, who undergo cryptolysis, are completely cured. The procedure also serves patients who experience of repeated attacks of tonsillitis. Those patients show a decrease in the amount of episodes of tonsillitis each year after undergoing cryptolysis.

Cryptolysis is non-invasive treatment which is used successfully to overcome halitosis. The procedure works through the elimination of the crypts on the surface on the tonsils and gums that gather sulfur producing bacteria which can be the primary causes underlying halitosis. Cryptolysis is secure, affordable and efficient in eradicating halitosis and tonsil stones.

  1. QUESTION:
HOW DO YOU GET RID OF TONSIL STONES UNDER THE TISSUE?
HOW DO YOU GET RID OF TONSIL STONES UNDER THE TISSUE?

I can see the stone but it looks shiny so I guess there’s a layer of clear tissue covering it. The problem is that I think it’s causing halitosis and I can feel it when I swallow.

Is there any way I can get rid of the tonsil stone at home?

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
      Use a q-tip.
And if that’s not long enough, get a wooden shish kabob stick and poke it right on the side of it. It should push it out.
After it’s out, slightly gag, and more may come out. Poke that out too.
Rinse and gargle with listerine, hydrogen peroxide/water rinse, or salt water. It’s disgusting, but that’s how to get it out.
You could also try blasting it with a Waterpik if you have one.

Such a disgusting answer to a disgusting problem, right?
      Hey, it happens :)

  2. QUESTION:
Tonsil infection that doesn’t fit the symptoms of tonsillitis?!?
I plan to go to a clinic and take care of this, but before I do I wanted to explain this weird situation I’m in with an unconventional tonsil infection…

My left tonsil got majorly sore and swollen a few days ago, I’ll say about 4 days by now. The problem with diagnosing my swollen/infected tonsil as “tonsillitis” or “strep” is that I have slightly different symptoms then most, and I’m wondering what is wrong with me…

I have all the standard flu-like symptoms of tonsillitis: awful sleep hampered by fever/chills and body aches (weak, restless bones), ear ache (on that left side) and swollen glands on the left side of my neck, difficulty and pain swallowing and talking, however that is where the similarities stop…

Two major differences: my tonsil is not covered in any white coating or any sort of discoloration that would indicate strep or tonsillitis. It’s just very red and majorly inflamed. Everything I’ve found online indicates that if it’s tonsillitis, I should have a white coating, but I don’t… The other major difference is that the infected/swollen tonsil is absolutely riddled with tonsil stones, also known as tonsilloliths…

If you don’t know what tonsil stones are, they are these small, yellow calcified deposits that grow in the crypts and crevices of your tonsils from an accumulation of (typically) too much sugar or bacteria. I drink way too much soda, so it’s obvious I loaded my tonsil up with enough sugar to fill every crypt with tonsil stones… tonsil stones are not a normal symptom of tonsillitis, and frankly, they are one of the most common and ignored oral problems ever. Tonsil stones are what causes severe halitosis (bad breath) and they can be extremely uncomfortable, like pebbles or sand caught in there and it is not fun.

The most bizarre thing is that tonsil stones are supposed to be easily removed by use of an oral irrigator, which by some miracle I actually have one, and I can’t tell you how annoying it was when I found out that it didn’t work for me. The infection has swollen the tonsil so much and loaded it up with so many tonsil stones and thick mucus to hold them in place, that the water pressure of the oral irrigator isn’t enough to free/clear the stones out of my tonsil. I’m wondering why.

In addition to the swollen gland in my neck (same side) which looked like a small walnut bulging from my neck, over the course of the last 24 hours it has spread upwards (the inflamation under the jaw) up another inch to just under my jaw’s hinge… I’m really freaked out.

I don’t know if this is even tonsillitis, and if it is, if it’s viral or bacterial. Please help!
I should also add that I have never had tonsillitis before, maybe once when I was a kid but it quickly passed. Nothing like this. Never a bulging swollen gland in my neck… also the tonsil itself is about double to almost triple its normal size, if that helps. Thanks to anyone who can help…

The first time I kissed her I got quite sick, with a fever and an orange yellow mucousy buildup in the back of my throat. Made out with her again and got sick again, only not so bad. This has now happened probably 5-10 times now of varying degrees, even after her tonsils were taken out.

Now the sickness isn’t as bad. Perhaps I’ve built up a small immunity (or it has). But there is still a orange (worst), yellow (moderate) or light yellow w/ gray tint (least severe) thick, mucousy buildup in the back of my throat.

After kissing it takes me about 7-14 days to beat it. Other symptoms are tonsil stones, a chalky film and bad breath. Her mild halitosis reminds me of this illness that terrorized me.

Ive read this might be caused by a too much sulfurous bacteria in the back of her mouth; treatable by gargling with 3% Hydrogen Peroxide and salt water. Any validity to this?

Can anyone help? I’ve had enough; if we can’t find a solution then the relationship will probably have to end.

    • ANSWER:
Infectious mononucleosis (Kissing disease) is suspected.

Personality Test for the Puppies

Dogs too have unique personalities. Their personality can be checked at a very young age through a test. When you know your dog’s personality it becomes easier for you to train it.

While it is not true that a puppy test allows to you buy a perfect dog, it can definitely help you in bringing home a mentally stable and easy going one. Nevertheless, the experience and traini 00004000 ng techniques are far more important in the mental and physical development of dog.

There are certain conditions of the puppy test and we shall take a look at them.

– The test has to be performed in a quiet place which does not have any external distractions for the dog. The place should be unknown to the dog.

– The test should be conducted on the puppy when it is between 5 to 7 weeks old. At this age, the puppies are not fully attached with the humans, however their personalities are already built.

– The test should be performed by a person who is a stranger to the puppy, which will ensure that the results are unbiased and trustworthy.

There are several tests that exist for testing the dog’s personality. Let’s take a look at one such test. This test is known as the Campbell test. This test marks puppies for 5 different criteria.

– Social attraction

– Ability to follow

– Response to obligation

– Social domination

– Acceptance to be lifted

To test social attraction, the dog’s reaction is checked by the testing person by sitting at a distance from it. It is checked if the dog approaches the person, if yes then how does he keep his tail, high or low? It is checked if the dog explores his surrounding or he simply tries to run away.

In order to check the dog’s ability to follow, the tester will simply put a puppy next to him and walk a little and then check if the dog follows him or not. The other things to be checked are whether the dog jumps while walking or tries to bite the persons ankles. Does the dog keep his distance while following? Or does he simply wander off?

To check how the dog responds to the obligation, he is put on his back on the ground and a hand is placed over his chest. It is checked whether the dog violently tries to bite the hand and get away, or shows initial protest and then calms down or whether he simply lays quiet and tries to lick the person’s hand. Be sure to do this on a soft surface or you may injure the dogs back.

During social domination testing, the tester will merely sit close to the puppy and hit it gently. The clues will come from whether they try to bite, climb upon a person’s body or just try to run away from the tester.

Finally, for testing how the puppy reacts to being lifted. The dog is lifted from the ground by keeping the arms under his chest so that the puppy doesn’t see the person. Here too, it is tested if the dog violently tries to bite the hand and get away, or shows initial protest and then calms down or whether he remains quiet and licks the persons hand.

The combination score of all the areas determine the overall personality of your dog. If you are new to keeping a dog, you should try bringing in a dog who is not very dominant as you may find it difficult to handle it.

What’s That Smell? The Dirty Truth About Your Dog’s Bad Breath

If you have noticed a foul odor coming from your dog’s mouth, chances are your dog may have dental disease that requires veterinary care. The smell is not simply “dog breath”. The odor comes from a combination of bacteria, infection, and inflammation and is no more ‘normal’ for your dog than it would be for you. This article describes how to examine your dog’s mouth for signs of dental disease that require veterinary attention, so that you can keep your pet happy and healthy.

Have you noticed an unpleasant odor coming from your dog’s mouth? Is it becoming less enjoyable to spend time with your dog because you can’t stand the smell? We’ve all heard the expression “dog breath”, and it’s a common misconception that it is normal for dogs to have a foul smelling mouth. However, the truth is that halitosis, or foul breath, is no more normal for a dog than it is for a human. In fact, it is a major sign that your dog needs veterinary attention.

Take a moment and imagine what would happen if you lived your entire life without any dental care, or even brushing your teeth. Your teeth would most likely be in pretty poor condition, and you would be dealing with cavities, infection, and pain. Many dogs go their entire lives without dental care with the same results, which has a negative effect on the quality of life for the animal.

If you have noticed a bad smell in your dog’s mouth, take a moment to investigate further. Lift your dog’s lip up and look at the teeth. Try to get a good look at the cheek teeth in the back of the mouth as well. What do you see? Do you notice an accumulation of hardened, brown material on the teeth? If so, your dog probably needs a dental cleaning at the minimum. The hardened, brown material is called calculus, and it is the result of the interaction between the dog’s saliva and the bacteria in the mouth. Although regular brushing helps to prevent calculus formation, it cannot be removed by brushing – it must be removed by your veterinarian using ultrasonic scaling instruments. If left untreated, the calculus will lead to gingivitis and, eventually, infection and pain.

Take a look at your dog’s gum line above his teeth. How does it look? The color of your dog’s gums should be about the same color as your own – light pink. If the gums are reddened and inflamed, this indicates that your dog has gingivitis. Are there areas of the gums that are recessed, so that more of the tooth is exposed than there should be? This is called gingival recession, and exposes the root of the tooth to the environment, and can be very painful. Do you see any pus at the gum line? If so, this indicates severe infection, and requires immediate attention.

Finally, examine the individual teeth a little bit closer. Are there any fractured, or broken, teeth? Are any of the teeth loose? Loose teeth are an indication of advanced periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is disease of the supportive structure of the teeth – the bone, ligaments, and other tissue that keeps the teeth in place. Periodontal disease is graded on a scale of 1 to 4, with 4 being the most severe. The teeth do not become loose until the disease has advanced to stage 3 or 4, so loose teeth always indicate a need for veterinary attention.

Most of us take care of our own teeth. We brush two or three times daily, visit the dentist twice yearly, and we certainly seek dental care when we are experiencing dental pain. Why not do the same for our pets? Dental disease has a huge effect on the quality of life of our pets. If you are noticing any of the above signs of dental disease in your dog, get to your veterinarian, and find out what needs to be done to keep your dog happy and healthy.
